Merkel: Ukraine can go to Eurasian Union (i.e. Putin’s new USSR)

Germany’s Angela Merkel has said Ukraine is free to “go to” Russia’s “Eurasian Union”, amid signs of a new willingness to make peace with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

Speaking to German public broadcaster ARD on Sunday (24 August), the German chancellor said her visit to Kiev on Saturday was designed to prepare for peace talks between Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko and Putin in Minsk on Tuesday, but warned the public not to expect a “breakthrough”.

She mentioned Ukrainian “decentralization”, a deal on gas prices, and Ukraine’s “trade relations” with Russia as elements that could bring about an accord.

“And if Ukraine says ‘we are going to the Eurasian Union now’, the European Union would never make a big conflict out of it, but would insist on a voluntary decision,” Merkel added. …

Sounds a lot like throwing Ukraine under the bus.

Sometimes it’s best to keep your yap shut Merkel.

The Ukraine doesn’t need comments from the peanut gallery.

That’s easy for her to say because she knows it will never happen.

That’s more of a choice than Van Rompuy offered when he said they would be EU whether they want it or not.

Up, von Ribbentrop-Molotov all over again.

She's essentially giving Putin everything he wants:

a) 'Decentralization' means phony 'republics' that will just be annexed to Russia like Ossetia was from Georgia;

b) a 'truce' means Russia will simply move troops directly into eastern Ukraine without opposition.

The Ukrainians may just say, 'screw you', but more politely. Or even better, get together with the Poles and suddenly find 'technical' difficulties delivering gas to Germany.

Sounds a lot like throwing Ukraine under the bus.

That's certainly what the headline sounded like, but her actual statement sounded perfectly reasonable.

“And if Ukraine says ‘we are going to the Eurasian Union now’, the European Union would never make a big conflict out of it, but would insist on a voluntary decision,”

Ukrainians have spoken decisively with their blood they favor Europe over Russia. Who in their right mind would want any connection with Russia who kills you...invades you, when they don’t get what they want?

Ukrainian people would rather join Europe, they see Russia as enemies and bullies and occupiers now. Hard to believe Merkel would be pushing them to subjugate themselves to Tsar Putin

Maybe some of these countries between EUSSR and Soviet Russia should create their own union, Ukraine and Georgia can be the launchpad.

I was under the impression that they favored independence over being subjugated by either “Europe” or Russia.

If it was so decisive the Crimean succession would not have worked. Apparently Ukrainians hold the ethnic Russians are at odds.

Ukraine sees being aligned with Europe not Russia as the way to have independence. Ukrainian hatred of Russians goes back hundreds of years and is well deserved. Who have Russians ever treated well? Where have Russians ever promoted freedom? No one and no where! Russians are curse on the earth.

Crimea was taken by military strength and lies.

If that’s how they see it, then they’ve been had. The EUSSR is not about independence; that’s why their constitution (in the form of the Treaty of Lisbon) insists on “ever closer union between the peoples of Europe”, which means surrendering national sovereignty and national identity (in an echo of the USSR’s attempt to create a “Soviet people”).
