George W. Bush: Excerpt of speech to Congress 9/20/01

Posted on 08/21/2014 1:03:41 PM PDT by Toespi

We're not deceived by their pretenses to piety.

We have seen their kind before. They're the heirs of all the murderous ideologies of the 20th century. By sacrificing human life to serve their radical visions, by abandoning every value except the will to power, they follow in the path of fascism, Nazism and totalitarianism. And they will follow that path all the way to where it ends in history's unmarked grave of discarded lies.

Americans are asking, "How will we fight and win this war?" We will direct every resource at our command -- every means of diplomacy, every tool of intelligence, every instrument of law enforcement, every financial influence and every necessary weapon of war -- to the destruction and to the defeat of the global terror network.

Now this war will not be like the war against Iraq a decade ago, with a decisive liberation of territory and a swift conclusion. It will not look like the air war above Kosovo two years ago, where no ground troops were used and not a single American was lost in combat.

Our response involves far more than instant retaliation and isolated strikes. Americans should not expect one battle, but a lengthy campaign unlike any other we have ever seen. It may include dramatic strikes visible on TV and covert operations secret even in success.

We will starve terrorists of funding, turn them one against another, drive them from place to place until there is no refuge or no rest.

And we will pursue nations that provide aid or safe haven to terrorism. Every nation in every region now has a decision to make: Either you are with us, or you are with the terrorists.

From this day forward, any nation that continues to harbor or support terrorism will be regarded by the United States as a hostile regime. Our nation has been put on notice, we're not immune from attack. We will take defensive measures against terrorism to protect Americans.

I will never forget this speech. A great reminder of what a true leader sounds like in a time of crisis. Interestingly the next to last paragraph makes me want to ask, is America now one of the nations that gives aid or safe haven to terrorists? Is Obama with us or against us?

Me neither. It was the greatest speech of my lifetime, and Bush showed an executive presence and calm that allayed many of my concerns. He was a great leader in the aftermath of 9/11. As was Guliani and Pataki.

How can “the won” give a speech like this at all!? He publically sympathizes with islam. If everyone is nice, and good, and peaceful; how you can ever stand up against them when they prove otherwise time and again?

Couldn’t agree more about this speech, and it makes me ill when the Dems continue to claim Bush couldn’t string two words together. With him, his father and Reagan, my family did not wake up everyday feeling sick over the purposeful destruction of our country emanating from the Whitehouse. When Isis arrives on the doorsteps of the clueless liberals who adore Obama, I wonder if they will get it, or perhaps they will try and negotiate.

That’s fine to crack on the obamabots like that, but what are we going to do in the middle east?

Is Obama with us or against us?

He is agains US. He seeks our destruction. He Lies 24/7 and his actions indicate he serves the Father of Lies.

Totalitarianism in all it's forms is EVIL! Progressive, Socialist, Marxist, Fascist, Communist, Dictator, Islamist; ALL EVIL!

All seek rule by compulsion. All seek to enslave. All except Dictators profess they must Rule The World.

We witness a convergence of the Godless Left, Global Fascists and Islamists against Christians, Jews, Freedom Lovers. Each of those elements are convinced they will ultimately prevail over the other two. None will, God ultimately will defeat them all.

Great speech.

It’s sad to know, 13 years later, we lost focus and didn’t follow through.

The Democrats/liberals spent the next seven years, every single day, fighting, lying and destroying GWB for political gain rather than the enemy. They are 100% responsible for the horrific carnage in the Middle East today.

It was a great speech and the Bush plan set out at the time was well implemented through January 20, 2009 when “we” didn’t lose focus - Obama overtly refocused US policy on undoing all the progress that had been made. e.g.:

“Our response involves far more than instant retaliation and isolated strikes. Americans should not expect one battle, but a lengthy campaign unlike any other we have ever seen. It may include dramatic strikes visible on TV and covert operations secret even in success.”

Obama now does far less - delays retaliation and even fewer “isolated strikes.” He was unwilling to fight any battles - failed to even complete the Status of Forces Agreement in Iraq. Covert operations that should have been kept secret are now publicized - both successful and unsuccessful - emboldening the enemy to retaliate and showing them weaknesses.

“We will starve terrorists of funding, turn them one against another, drive them from place to place until there is no refuge or no rest.”

Obama funded the terrorists through his ill-planned efforts to destabilize unfavored regimes. He has united disparate forces into a now expanding government with territory, military resources, and immense funding. They now essentially have their own country - complete refuge. lots of rest. And he freed rather than prosecuted terrorist leaders in exchange for a deserter - they now have both refuge and rest (though they probably aren’t resting - they are probably very busy coordinating with ISIS).

Countries that cooperated with us to stop terrorists now are overtaken by US funded rebels who are siding ultimately with the terrorists.

Pray we survive 2-1/2 more years.
