Good point.
I don’t believe this. I know many smart women who are good at math,(I am not one of them) but I know many more men who are good at math. Although, if this is true, the fault no doubt lies with the NY school systems who are more focused on teaching kids how to put condoms on fruit than teaching kids how to count fruit.
Mod said the reason was “tacky”
I never had the chance to go to later school.
It is hurting me now.
Thank The USN for giving me 2 years of excellent school in exchange for 6 years of duty.
“I got nothin against women and they are quite capable, but my experience is they do not want to do the hard everyday work.”
That’s why men get paid more than women in such fields. Something that I have no problem with. You should be rewarded based on ability and productivity.
The issue is the grade range - its clear that people who can’t understand why boys aren’t doing as well in grades 3-8, don’t have boys in grades 3-8. School is not on their radar at all and getting by with the least amount of effort is the goal so they can get outside to play. Boys start recognizing the importance of school later (I hope! - as the mother of 11 year old and 9 year old boys) which seems to be confirmed by the fact (mentioned in the article) that boys do better than girls on the math SAT which they take when they are juniors and seniors in high school.
I know some brilliant and capable women, It’s just not the norm in high disciple fields. (In my experience)
Yup. The Service! Most of the engineers and techs that I have worked with over the years spent a few years in the service. Very common.
It might have helped me because I was certainly lost right after HS.
BTW, you are never too old. :)
Modern America has no use for brave, courageous, independent men; it wants a society of obedient drones. Women serve this purpose better than us Y chromosome relics.
Males are the ones who push the bleeding leading edge. Take males out of the question and the advance slows and stops.
Lisa Randall of Harvard comes to mind contemporaneously. But then, she’s a physicist. Yet one has to be pretty up on math as a string theorist.
Then there’s Sophie Germain of an earlier age.
This society has turned into an “Atta girl society”, and a “stop it!” society when it comes to girls and boys.
Bright young boys are being turned off to school before they get past elementary. My 30 y/o sons, and many of their contemporaries, chose to opt out, go for home schooling, or just take the GED, go to the community college, and get on with it. The ‘typical’ public school has been short-changing boys for a long time now.
Years ago I sat on an advisory board for parents at a science/tech high school. Oh, the hand-wringing because the girl students didn’t take the highest level advanced math/science courses in large enough numbers to suit the quota-oriented! (those girls who did take the courses excelled, and most of those went on to medical school). The other girls have succeeded in law, public policy, business, etc. Not everyone has to be a doctor or engineer but too much emphasis placed on either boys or girls (at the cost of the other) pursuing a certain line of study just seems wrong. Hopefully, this pendulum will swing. Soon.
Will anyone link these stats to the recent events in Ferguson? Males - black and white, but the black underclass feels it first - are losing their traditional role as providers. Their solution to affirm themselves as people and as men? Gangs and crime, with sports and entertainment as an option for the supremely gifted. The solution? I don’t know.
Boys are much more interested in “Doing” at that age.
They want to build things and emulate their fathers.
When I finally got a math instructor that showed me how math applied to what I thought was important, it started to click.
Much later I realized that it was a general language and saved you from breaking your back doing things the wrong way around with experimentation.
For many years I was taught by women who gave me goofy problems like, if Mary gets on a train in Boston at 9AM headed to Chicago at 45 mph and Bob gets on a train from Chicago at 7AM headed to Boston, Where will Bob and Mary have lunch?
I don’t even have to look at the textbooks or be associated with education to know what’s going on.
You confirm it. More and more schools are doing away with recesses too, which is fundamental to young boy’s health.
You name it, they’ve done just about everything they can to destroy boys in the school setting.
Then you turn on the tube, and even at this time, you’ll still see them cheering on the girls with nothing in the same context for boys.
It’s massive sex discrimination by design.
I know. I saw it. The Title of the thread was ‘tacky’.
Do you remember what it said ?
For the record I was a Travel Coordinater as a side duty in the USN.
Balance the bloody budget too.
As I recall it was the same title, It just had some nasty reference by the other author from NYCMag about guys keeping severed ****’s in a jar.
Precalc isn’t calculus. Physics isn’t second year physics, and chemistry isn’t second year chemistry.
finally screwed up teaching math in a way that helps the girls win. there will be a lot less mathematicians in the future.
