They say the Cold War is over, but Russia and the U.S. remain the leading supplier of weapons to countries around the world and are the two biggest military powers. Lately, tensions have been pretty high, too.

The U.S. supplies much of NATO and Middle Eastern allies like Turkey, Israel, and Saudi Arabia.

Russia supplies many BRIC nations, as well as Iran, much of Southeast Asia, and North Africa.

Anybody can write for yahoo/business insider, including your grandma, your neighbor, your dog or the janitor inside the department of sewage.

Yahoo pays its writers fractions of pennies for each hit on an article.

Soviet block weapons are designed to be cheap to produce and simple to maintain. As I recall from Viet Nam days, the SK-47 had a fraction of the moving parts of an M-16 and much sloppier tolerances. These two factors alone made it less expensive to produce and simpler to maintain. Perfect attributes for 3rd world markets.
