Ukraine crisis: the neo-Nazi brigade fighting pro-Russian separatists
UK Telegraph ^ | 8-11-2014 | Tom Parfitt

Kiev throws paramilitaries – some openly neo-Nazi - into the front of the battle with rebels

The fighters of the Azov battalion lined up in single file to say farewell to their fallen comrade. His pallid corpse lay under the sun in an open casket trimmed with blue velvet.

Some of the men placed carnations by the body, others roses. Many struck their chests with a closed fist before touching their dead friend’s arm. One fighter had an SS tattoo on his neck. Sergiy Grek, 22, lost a leg and died from massive blood loss after a radio-controlled anti-tank mine exploded near to him.

As Ukraine’s armed forces tighten the noose around pro-Russian separatists in the east of the country, the western-backed government in Kiev is throwing militia groups – some openly neo-Nazi - into the front of the battle.

SNIP---- But Kiev’s use of volunteer paramilitaries to stamp out the Russian-backed Donetsk and Luhansk “people’s republics”, proclaimed in eastern Ukraine in March, should send a shiver down Europe’s spine. Recently formed battalions such as Donbas, Dnipro and Azov, with several thousand men under their command, are officially under the control of the interior ministry but their financing is murky, their training inadequate and their ideology often alarming.

The Azov men use the neo-Nazi Wolfsangel (Wolf’s Hook) symbol on their banner and members of the battalion are openly white supremacists, or anti-Semites.

Has it occurred to you that “Nazi” might mean something very different to Ukrainians, than it does to us “westerners”? In the WWII era, Ukrainians faced a stark choice between Germany and the USSR — between Nazis and Stalinists. They suffered under Soviet Stalinism for 6 decades — so they know how bad that was. It was a case of “the devil you know” being worse than you could possibly have imagined. Meanwhile, they recall it was the Nazis who fought the Communists — so, perhaps they see the Nazis as more of a resistance movement, than the vile ideology that we know them to be.

Your propaganda detector needs new batteries.

And the US armed and supported Stalin and his evil Soviet communist party in our battle with Nazis.

It's pretty clear that "Nazi" means exactly what it is supposed to mean to these people. Although they call themselves "Social Nationalists", not "National Socialists".

Right, most of the guys in that battalion were probably not out of diapers when the Soviet Union fell (if they were even alive yet). They certainly don’t remember anything about WWII.

“Nazi” battalions happened to be nationally diverse, with ethnic Russians equally represented and sharing common goal with Ukrainians and others - liberation of Ukraine. The “Anti-Fascist” rebels, on the other hand, are predominantly rabid Russian nationalists, killing people for just speaking Ukrainian or keeping Ukrainian insignia. Use of some heraldic nonsense does not make one Nazi. Killing and looting of people different than you does. Especially on occupied land.

There are a lot of bad characters on both sides of this one.
As there usually are in any war, but this one more than many.
The Russians are using Chechens and Central Asians, among others.
I understand why the Ukrainians AND the Russians are using mercenaries wholesale for this. This is not a popular war on either side, and neither government wants to or can sell a general civilian mobilization. Which is one reason why the forces involved are absurdly small. No trademark “Tank Armies” or “Shock Armies” here.
They are left with the sort of people who want to or can be paid to fight.

How much do you “remember” about WWII? Or the Nazis, or the Soviets? These are cultural “memories” (”memes”, to correctly use a much overworked term).

.....”This is the unit run by Oleh Lyashko”....

That brute basks in killing and torturing others....and his group is funded by the Interior Ministry of Kiev as well as other Oligarchs. It cannot go unsaid that most Nazi's are sadistic by nature....if not when they join certainly after they become participants in their teachings.

You need to be fair in your assessment.

Kiev is using these mercenaries because their Army was and continues to defect.....those mercenaries were killing young men who refused to fight..... The Kiev opposition has mercenaries because their numbers were not sufficient to ward off the military might Kiev's been using against it's citizens.

From your article:

“Interestingly, many of the men in the battalion are Russians from eastern Ukraine who wear masks because they fear their relatives in rebel-controlled areas could be persecuted if their identities are revealed.”

And has already been pointed out to you, a lot of the Russian volunteers that are coming across the border as “rebels” are tied to Nazi-linked Russian nationalist groups. So here we have Russian Nazis fighting Russian Nazis.

Anyway, to remind you what’s been pointed out to you time and time again: The two “Nazi” party candidates got less than 2% of the vote in the last election.

“It cannot go unsaid that most Nazi’s are sadistic by nature....”

I think Lyashko fancies himself as some kind of a modern day version of Oskar Dirlewanger, down to the released from prison criminals serving in his units, that he sees as “Einsatzgruppen”.

Read about Dirlewanger, and some of the things he did, especially while fighting against Soviet Partisans in Ukraine.

A lot of the stories of German atrocities on the east front are embellished propaganda stories, but this guy was THE REAL DEAL, an insane butcher on a huge scale.

As I have often said, it is a CIVIL WAR, not an “Anti-terrorist Operation” as Kiev has tried to claim, and still does.

There are people from North and West Ukraine serving with the rebels, as well.

Of note is how the unrest around Karhkov, and near Hungary has grown in the last week.

Neo-naziism has been spreading rapidly in Eastern Europe ever since the wall fell. Partly, yes it was a reaction to Communism, but don’t kid yourself. These guys have the exact same ideology of their American counterparts in every respect.

They made need to tone down their rhetoric due to the hate speech laws common in Europe, or simply to increase their political viability, but when they converse with their American counterparts, there is no actual difference in ideology.

I am fair - The pro-Russian side themselves has complained that they are getting no recruits in the Donets.
And they also admit they are using Chechens and others, who are most certainly not locals.

This is not popular on either side, that seems both correct and fair.

Perhaps you need to tell these young characters recently marching in Kiev that it's just about 'memories'

I think you're right. I've been watching him throughout the events in Ukraine....amazing how he sees himself...arrogant is beyond an understatement. Mix that with his Nazi leanings and he's one hellish killing machine....as are those who join with him.

Kiev started to distance themselves from him when things got too heated which would point to their involvement and leadership concerning his actions. That's when Kiev began saying Lyashko couldn't always be controlled....but the Interior Ministry continues to fund and provide weaponry just the same.
