A public health official says a patient at a hospital near Toronto has been isolated as a precautionary measure after showing flu-like symptoms similar to those characteristic of the Ebola virus.
Dr. Eileen de Villa with Peel Public Health says the steps are being taken because the patient at Brampton Civic Hospital recently travelled to Nigeria, which has been hit with an outbreak of the disease.
She says the patient is showing a fever and other flu-like symptoms but cautioned there has been no diagnosis yet.
She says the hospital has put heightened infection-control measures in place in addition to isolating the patient.
The World Health Organization says the latest Ebola outbreak in Africa is the largest and longest ever recorded for the disease and has killed at least 961 people.
Nigeria on Friday declared a state of emergency because of Ebola.

Update On Patient Being Tested For Ebola Virus Disease in Ontario
William Osler Health System’s Brampton Civic Hospital is currently testing a patient who recently travelled to Canada from Nigeria and presented with symptoms including fever, headache and malaise.
This action was taken as a precautionary measure and results of the testing are expected within the next 24 hours. Samples have been sent to the National Microbiology Laboratory in Winnipeg.
The patient is currently in isolation and is being treated for a fever and other flu-like symptoms.
The Minister of Health is closely managing the situation and is in close contact with the Chief Medical Officer of Health, the local public health unit and the hospital.
only takes a coupe of hours for the test results
oh yea... it’s the weekend... and there aren’t any doctors working in Canada on the weekend
we might have to wait until Tuesday for the results
I wish we could do something about this plague ... it's the most
dangerous and damaging thing to come out of Africa ... ever!
You must be raisis.
oh yea... its the weekend... and there arent any doctors working in Canada on the weekend
I think you are wrong.
ABSOLUTE GENIUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I this person does have it then they have already exposed others including hospital personnel, and the hospital itself.
That is poetic.
Can I use it?
Because our world leaders and American politicians want this disease to spread.
Name me a single past administration that would not have shut down all flights from that area and surrounding countries by now.
Well, that there is just the question.
If you promise to put it to good use annoying libtards ... lots of them ... sure.
I know that’s the case in Toronto and across the pond in Glasgow... i lost family in both situations
We are in a new era now, Lady Heron. This era scares me to death. But how do we stop this influx through our borders? No one is listening.
A patient came from an African country and presents at a clinic with non-specific symptoms that could be just about anything. There are lots of diseases in Africa.
Why is this news?
When a patient turns up positive for Ebola, then it’s news. Until then, it’s just some reporter filling their publishing quota.
Condolences to you.
You said “Canada” and I find that hard to believe.
go experience it for yourself and all will be revealed
Not just Canada...do not ever be in a hospital in Florida on a weekend...even ICU....spent 2 weeks with a relative in 2000 who eventually died...weekends were awful
Asshole, the test results are already back. It was not ebola.
