During the Revolutionary War the British editions of the King James Version supply was cut off to the American colonies as the authorized English language Bibles in the United States.

Congress authorized a loan of money to help the printing and distribution of this approved Bible to be made available to the public and printed by Robert Aitken in 1782. He printed 10,000 copies.

Here is the Journal of Congress, September 12, 1782.

The entry in Congress' journal on September 12 shows the correspondence and resolution authorizing the Aitken Bible.

This Link to the Library of Congress says the date was Sept. 11, 1776 when Congress voted to purchase Bibles, however, the journal is dated Sept. 12. (Great Library of Congress link to 'Religion and the Founding of the American Republic')
