What’s with the extraneous apostrophe?

Ike already has a Memorial. It’s called the Interstate Highway System.

Gehry’s designs are dreadful.

How much did it cost to build the Washington monument, etc.?

That looks more like the kind of memorial built by the people Ike helped to defeat.

And what’s wrong with his delightfully modest home in Gettysburg?! As a child, my husband saw Ike in his golf cart and waved to him. Ike waved back!

“And what’s wrong with his delightfully modest home in Gettysburg?!”

Or his presidential library in Abilene.

It is long past time we stopped spending taxpayer money on the worship and glorification of our former presidents, particularly the recent ones. Let them fade away after serving in office. They are supposed to be elected servants of the public, not nobility.

I say take images of presidents off the coinage and money too. Return our circulating coinage and currency to images of lady liberty, our national parks, or great moments in our history (such as flag raising on Iwo Jima, the British surrender at Yorktown, or the first man on the moon) instead of honoring dead presidents.

How do you spend $44 Million and 10 years “planning”???

It brings life to the meme:

“Give an Engineer $1 Million and 1 Year, and 12 months later he’ll nearly have the book case complete.”

Especially before O'Nero's mug gets on a coin. That coin would have to be declared counterfeit.

I’ll agree with your first point - we need to stop these insane monuments to lousy modern presidents. At least Ike was a great man! If he’s already got two museums in his honor (and I love the Gettysburg home)let’s quit now.

It is already built.
Interstate Highway 80 (I-80) between Joliet and Rock Island Illinois.

There’s even memorial signs posted.

I’m not keen on Gehry’s buildings or design. They seem trendy and exhibit form without function, which would seem the opposite of good design. Will they “age” well or 50 years ago will they look as outdated as other architectural flashes-in-the-pan such as De Stijl.

I will know that the next President (if there is one) “gets it” when he abolishes the STFU Speech and sends Congress written messages. And I agree that coins should show Liberty, not Presidents.

And Air Force One should be sold on eBay. There is no reason for the President to have an airplane. If a President wants to fly, let him buy a ticket.

I guarantee that the last person who would want this - or any - monument is Dwight David Eisenhower.

I work for an engineering company. So many government “issues” inflate any project. From environmental issues, tree protection and right of way it is crazy. All of these have to be researched and studied before anything “real” is done. And engineers are paid pretty good for their time.

“Give an Engineer $1 Million and 1 Year, and 12 months later he’ll nearly have the book case complete.”

I prefer Nevil Shute's definition from Trustee from the Toolroom, "An engineer is a man who can do for five bob what any bloody fool can do for a quid."

"5 bob" = 5 shillings = 1/4 pound sterling = $0.42 (today)
"a quid = one pound sterling = $1.69 (today)

Of course, Shute wrote long before OSHA, EPA, EEOC, the Consumer Protection Agency and the American Tort Lawyer.

Several years ago I read a study that concluded that to get the venerable Pipe Cub certified today would take two years and cost $2.3 million.
