In his commentary for Wednesdays Opinion page, UC San Diego communications professor Gary Fields rebukes those who talk or write about what is happening in Gaza while offering a very simple picture of Hamas as an implacable aggressor, and the state of Israel as an innocent victim of terror.
But nowhere in his essay does Fields detail why Israel has acted as it has in Gaza since it bulldozed Jewish settlements and withdrew soldiers from the 140-square-mile territory in 2005.
The narrative he ridicules of Israel feeling compelled to defend itself against a terrorist neighbor bent on Israels destruction is far more substantive than any narrative that simply refuses to address Hamas history and depicts Israel as being pointlessly cruel.
This history includes Gazas quick deterioration into a staging area for constant attacks on Israel after the 2005 Israeli pullout; Hamas specific actions in Gaza since the pullout; and the decades of Hamas murderous ways that led to its designation as a terrorist group by the U.S. State Department and the European Union...

I think the editorial board started out with ‘whitewashing’ (if you check out the link title in the little tab up there /\ it still reads, ‘the whitewashing of..’) but the article title reads ‘airbrushing’ - probably didn’t want to offend anyone in this PC world of ours
