Hearing set on move to block Nevada gun initiative

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - Carson District Judge James Wilson has set an Aug. 1 hearing on a move to block an initiative petition to expand background checks to nearly all gun sales in Nevada.

A group called Nevadans for Background Checks filed the petition on June 20, saying it was spurred by Gov. Brian Sandoval’s veto of similar legislation passed by the 2013 Legislature.

But a group of opponents filed a lawsuit on July 14 to block the initiative. Among other objections, opponents say the petition fails to make clear that it would impose criminal penalties “even for a sale between law abiding citizens.”

Opponents also said the language should be changed to make it clear to voters that “it criminalizes formerly voluntary conduct,” the Nevada Appeal reported (http://bit.ly/1n6KU7S ).

I did notice this BS paragraph towards the end of the piece”

“Background checks have been proven to dramatically reduce crime and save lives by preventing convicted felons, domestic-abuse perpetrators and the seriously mentally ill from buying firearms, organizers said.”

Since they didn’t specify which “organizers” stated this screed, I can only assume it ain’t the folks that are trying to block this BS initiative.

It will no as no surprise they are propagandists, but some Googling reveals:

Their web site: safenevada.org (they do like to abuse the word ‘safe’).

They are part of an umbrella organization:
‘EVERYTOWN FOR GUN SAFETY ACTION FUND, INC.’
No doubt this means they can and will establish safeohio.org etc.

Did I mention they were shameless propagandists reliant on buzzwords? Here are other astroturf groups/trademarks under their umbrella:
MOMS DEMAND ACTION
MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA
STROLLER JAM
MOMS TAKE THE HILL
EVERYTOWN FOR GUN SAFETY
EVERYTOWN MAYORS FOR GUN SAFETY
EVERYMOM
I’M A GUN SENSE VOTER
NEVADANS FOR BACKGROUND CHECKS
SAFE NEVADA

Typical leftist rubbish. Declare that your viewpoint is the safe, sensible one and that EVERYBODY agrees with you (mob mentality) then set up any dissenters as reckless, unsafe, etc.

The press releases go out and, as if by magic, the press print them verbatim along with the impressive, touchy-feely titles.

Oh by the way, there is one government action I support: if you are a mom and are in anyway swayed by these names and slogans you deserve to lose custody.

LOL! It’s a pretty “safe” bet that you are correct. Apparently the 100K+ signature must come from 4 distinct zones in the state. I’m sure they could get that many in Vegas alone but since they only need 25k+ from that zone, how many will the garner in the other 3 zones, whatever they are. They could probably get another 25k+ in the Reno area but not sure about the other 2 areas. I tried to find how the zones are laid out but couldn’t find what I was looking for. Maybe someone has a link or some guidelines. I tried the “petiton/ballot initiative” site on NV.gov but saw no maps or anything. Just “four zones”. Hmmmm.

relictele? Telecasters?

I just looked a the legislative maps from your suggestion. Seems like too many districts. Guess I’ll have to contact one of my senators to see if he knows how it’s divided up.
