The celebration began on Wednesday evening during an EU summit: a box of Belgian pralines (that she won’t touch given her diet); a bunch of flowers; champagne; and a German football shirt signed by all EU leaders.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel turned 60 on Thursday (17 July), but kept her cool, no-frills attitude towards the wave of tributes. […]

With unmatched popularity rates and the status of the longest-serving and most powerful of EU leaders, Merkel has achieved remarkable success after starting out as a scientist in the then East Germany. A Forsa poll on Wednesday showed that after more than eight years in power, 59 percent of Germans would vote for her rather than for her Social-Democrat rival and vice-chancellor, Sigmar Gabriel (14 percent). […]

Meanwhile, speculation she might step down before the end of her current term to take up an international top post—the presidency of the EU council or the United Nations—re-emerged earlier this month. …

So Does Merkel have a STASI past or does so not? Various dubious posts in the past have tried to besmirch her character by associating her with the Stasi

Her actions as Kanzler are bad enough, never mind that she was politically active in any capacity within the DDR (member of the FDJ).

That she could. I know a lot of septuagenarian women that look younger than Merkel, though.

Merkel is the ONLY world leader that can deal with Putin. She knows all about him and how he works from her days in East Germany and Dresden. She won’t let Putin walk all over her like that poof in the oval office.

Reportedly, she also got a nice present from president Obama:

A new cell phone, complete with very cool apps developed by the NSA…

She must have lived a tough life. She looks older than Hillary and that’s saying something.

Not a great feat—Sigmar Gabriel, a fat socialist whose nickname is Siggy Pop, is a real Kotzbrocken.

She used to have rivals in her own party, decent conservatives like Roland Koch or Friedrich Merz, but they are all gone: Retired from politics altogether! I have no idea what she did to them to get rid of them. Hope we will find out some day.

With the current admin changing sides, it’s now up to Germany, Israel, Canada, Australia and Japan to defend the free world.
