Who can afford to live on their own any more?
Even with two incomes at a once nice level, it is difficult.
Worst economy ever. Worst president (small p) ever.
This was common in the 1930’s during the last depression. Under another democrat president. Then that democrat president got us in to a world war.
History repeating?
Probably not. FDR was an American citizen, while baraq is a citizen of the world.
CWII Spark — While some think that it’s a bad thing “having kids living in the basement” it may well be the thing that causes some form of coherence when the SHTF: after all, if /they/ didn’t spare Dave-down-the-street what makes you think they’ll spare you or your family? — Personally, I’d rather have citizens with connection to family rather than government.
Nothing wrong with it, as long as every family member contributes. Many families have Grandma or Grandpa living with them. Having the adult younger generation at home is not bad either unless they are lazy and dependent.
First of all — these multi family households — everyone works somewhere, and they are good at saving money.
How do you think the Hispanics all drive big new vans?
One family makes the car payment.
One family pays the rent.
One family pays the utilities.
They split the food costs and don’t eat out.
Plenty of money usually for clothing — they are always clean and well groomed.
Are we taking lessons?
I’m not degrading Hispanics — this is how they do it!
I have no problem with these young people delaying moving out; they have little opportunity, and they’re living within their means rather than indebting themselves forever trying to maintain a lifestyle from 20 years ago on today’s salaries.
Once they couldn’t afford to start families, why would they leave the nest? Any I know living like this are paying rent; in a high-property tax state like NJ this may save the parents’ home from the tax-man.
To me the down side to this (an indirect consequence) is that the 0 birthrate is forcing the government to traffic Latino children here to keep schools open and apartments occupied.
Be honest when I was growing up my grandma used share babysitting duties with my parents both my parents works I don’t see anything wrong with that
Also I grew up in Asian neighborhood there is plenty of grandparents share duties with set of parents in same house there is usually college age cousin with them
But there's the rub; the reason that the cost-of-living is so high is because of government/quasi-government meddling (e.g EPA / Federal Reserve).
The low birthrate is a consequence of that. (It sure seems like a Catch-22 sort of cycle though.)
Exactly.
Asian families know how to pool their resources so they all get ahead financially.

Sure, and if Americans don’t feel they can provide for a family and stop having them, our government will just import families from somewhere else. Without this policy, whole areas (especially in the northeast) would be ghost towns, and the government employees would never let that happen.
