Alan Dershowitz has called it the most anti-Semitic and anti-Israel country in Europe today. Hanne Nabintu Herland, a religious scholar at the nations leading university, has criticized it for refus[ing] to distance itself from Hamas as a terrorist organization. Its government, as NRs Jay Nordlinger has noted, was the first outside the Islamic world to recognize Hamas.
Were talking, as you might have guessed, about Norway.
In the corridors of Norwegian power, Israel-hatred and sympathy for Islamic terrorists have long been the norm. In 2011, Norways ambassador to Israel distinguished between Anders Behring Breiviks murder spree and Hamas atrocities in Israel: While the former, he said, was inspired by an ugly ideology and was utterly undeserved by its victims, the latter is a result of Israels own occupation and thus, presumably, justified, or at least understandable.
Among the pillars of Norwegian civil society these days are Basim Ghozlan, a supporter of Hamas suicide bombings who runs Norways Islamic Federation, and Shoaib Sultan, who, though refusing to criticize Irans execution of gays and Yusuf al-Qaradawis description of the Holocaust as a gift from Allah, was accorded the high honor of arranging last years Constitution Day festivities in Oslo.
Nordlinger again: Norways attitude toward Israel is approximately that of the Middle East Studies department of the University of Michigan. Precisely.
All this Israel-hatred is, it should be emphasized, grounded in Norways left-wing establishment the mainstream media, the academy, and the political elite. Last Septembers elections, which brought a non-socialist coalition to power, shook that establishment to its roots. Not because of the senior partner in the coalition the soft-socialist, go-along-to-get-along Conservative party but because of the junior partner, the Progress party, a faction of free-market enthusiasts who are unabashedly pro-U.S. and pro-Israel.
Among the Progress partys most fervent supporters of America and Israel is Kristian Norheim, a 38-year-old member of Parliament and the partys foreign-policy spokesperson. On July 12, he posted on his Facebook page a cartoon from the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, drawn by Randy Bish. It showed an armed Hamas terrorist holding up a small child, and was captioned the Hamas missile defense shield. Norheims posted comment on the cartoon: Sad, but true.
To anyone who deplores terrorism and is appalled by Hamas gangsters habit of hiding behind women and children and of sequestering themselves in schools, hospitals, and mosques the cartoon is nothing more or less than a morally admirable response to a morally despicable practice. But the Norwegian establishment reacted to Norheims posting with outrage. The cartoon, protested the Socialist Left party, was tasteless, an expression of extreme views. The Labor partys Anniken Huitfeldt called it one-sided . . . propaganda that was unworthy and stupid. Rasmus Hansson of the Green party called Norheim shameful for posting the cartoon and Trine Skei Grande, head of the Liberal party, said that by giving it a thumbs-up hed lowered the level of debate.
All this, mind you, in a country where newspaper cartoons routinely depict Israeli leaders like Menachem Begin, Ariel Sharon, and Ehud Olmert in Nazi uniforms.
Pols, pressmen, and professors alike called on Norheim to be more nuanced and balanced on the IsraelPalestine issue. In official Norway, that means one thing: Condemn Israel as the aggressor, and embrace Hamas terrorists as victims.
On July 14, Norheims Facebook posting was the lead story on NRK radios news-discussion program Dagsnytt 18. A composed Norheim made his views clear: Both sides deserve criticism when they kill civilians, but the fact is that while Israel strives to avoid harming civilians, Hamas uses them as shields, and considers every Israeli a legitimate target. Norheims fellow guest, Socialist Left parliamentarian Heikki Holmås, came out of his corner with fists flying slamming Israels violation of international law, its wall, its ruthless killing of civilians, its continual humiliation of Palestine. NRKs host, for her part, asked Norheim to explain what he meant about Hamas using people as shields as if no one had ever heard of such a thing before. She added tartly that, by posting the cartoon, hed taken a clear position in an ongoing conflict had he done so, she inquired, with his partys permission?
In the next days issue of the newspaper Dagen, Holmås went further, accusing Norheim of supporting the murder of Palestinian children. A paid flack for Hamas couldnt have done a better job of defending and deflecting, of twisting and torturing the truth. (Perhaps when Holmåss party which now has the support of less than 3 percent of voters finally collapses, therell be a job for him in Ramallah.)
One of the many telling indications of the Orwellian nature of the debate over Israel and Hamas in Norway is this: After Norheim posted that cartoon, Jon-Inge Hansen, news editor of Varden, a paper published in Norheims hometown, Skien, unfriended him on Facebook. Your attitude regarding the death of civilians in Gaza, Hansen wrote on Norheims wall, is so offensive to me that I cant handle it anymore. Good luck with your conscience. Im taking mine and leaving.
That anyone could look at Bishs cartoon and see it as anything but a condemnation of Hamass callous attitude toward civilian life might seem preposterous. But not in official Norway, where Hamass savagery is virtually exempt from criticism and where Hamass critics are by definition heartless haters of Palestinians.
The suicidal Norwegians continue to import muslims to rape Norwegian girls.
Surprise surprise. The same idiots who gave Bath House a Nobel prize.
At least Sweden produces decent knives & outdoor gear.
I’ve read that the Israelis consider Ireland to be the most anti-Semitic. Let’s face it: Europe hates Jews.
Hard to believe Scandinavians seek to outdo each other in self-destruction to the extent they do.
IMO, it’s their Lutheran heritage.
Norway’s antisemitism has been well known and demonstrated for some time, but I can’t figure out the Icelandic thing... there’s probably not enough Jews there to fill up a schoolbus.
Not exactly the most trustworthy, informed, or reliable source.
Ireland, not Iceland
LOL, Epic Fail!
Nevermind...
RE: IMO, its their Lutheran heritage.
Not necessarily. See Post # 5 above.
Ireland is over 84% Roman Catholic.
I started scratching my head about Irish anti-Semitism when I was on several blogs about Ireland and its anti-Americanism. After googling I found several articles in English-language Israeli newspapers blasting Irish anti-Semitism. This from a country that was famous (well at least Dublin was) for its tolerance for Jews.
It’s simply Goebbels big lie going around again.
You don’t have to believe me. Just google Ireland and anti-Semitism. Their current president is a major America/Israel hater.
Robert Briscoe, Lord Mayor of Dublin: Jew.
“The Year of the Green Bagel.”
New York was where it all came together for a brief while. Now nobody remembers what the Jews, Italians, Irish had in common.
Antisemitism grows from the edges. Jews who own booze stores etc (some way from doctors and lawyers - sorry Mama) present a useful archetype for dispossessed leprechauns.
Mix in a little blood libel and you’re good to go.
Sadly, all of Europe is Moslem in a generation or two anyway so it’s just a distraction.
They’ll be BEGGING for Catholic Latinos by 2015,
And you’ll still need Jews like me to help you get through Joyce.
That is, when the MSM bemoans an anti-semitic incident in France, let's say, they generally fail to point out that the "Frenchman" involved was named Achmed.
The sensible Norwegians, that is those who emigrated to Maine and Minnesota, leaving behind their deranged Leftist cousins, are probably not violently anti-anything. However, in an effusion of Leftist Third World Goodwill and a surfeit of oil money, have opened their little country to hordes of Muslims from every Islamic hellhole on Earth. There are not a whole lot of Norwegians to begin with, so the fast-breeding inbred polygamists Muslims are a relatively large proportion of the population already. Of course, they are also lavishly subsidized and supported with every benefit a Socialist can dream up.
So, the MSM condemns "Norwegian" violent anti-semitism as if the perps were a couple of squarehead fishermen named Ole and Ragnar. NEWSFLASH! it was Achmed and Hamid, fresh from a night of cruising Oslo looking for teenagers to gang-rape because the Leftists running Norway won't punish them. That would be "racist."
Let's hope that up some fjord there are enough actual Norwegians left who will remember how to ..."civilize'em with a Krag," as we had to do during the Moro Muslim Rebellion in our erstwhile colony, the Phillipines, back when our Army used Norwegian-pattern Krag rifles and it was perfectly OK to sort out "the lesser breeds without the law."
Fortunately or unfortunately, everyone in Bergen knows that like most boys beaten into that peculiar submission, Achmed and Hamid have a hard time ‘fueling the little battleship’ when it comes to the girls. Appropriately, it’s a crime of insecurity as it was for child rapist mohammad (PBUH) and his officers illiteracy, poverty, incest, paedophelia, and violence. Alas Kabbalist scholars speculate Minnesota slouches toward Bethlehem. To be sure, one “Ole and Ragnar” joke, properly told whilst ice-fishing, might bring down all of Islam.
