Law Schools Peer Into The Abyss
Forbes ^ | July 10, 2014 | George Leef

Not so long ago, law school was a growth industry, with new schools being created and enrollments going ever higher. No more. There has been a dramatic turn-around over the last ten years.

Enrollments of first-year students are back where they were 40 years ago. According to the Law School Admissions Council, in 2004, more than 100,000 students applied for law school, but in 2013, just 59,000 did. Some law schools have had to lay off faculty members and administrators. Four independent law schools have recently had their bonds downgraded to “junk” status by Moody’s and Standard & Poor’s, reflecting their questionable finances.

Officials at the Thomas B. Cooley law school have decided to cancel the entire incoming class for this fall at its Ann Arbor campus.

Some law schools have significantly cut tuition. That has helped to stop their enrollment slide, but this may be one of those “rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic” phenomena, since students lured into Law School A with a discount are lost to Law Schools B through Z.

The weakest won’t survive even though the federal government has helped to keep law school enrollments from falling even more. As a Wall Street Journal editorial noted recently, the “Pay As You Earn” program that was expanded in 2011, “has been a slow-motion bailout for law schools.” Students who graduate with heavy debts will be able to escape from paying much of it back provided that they go to work for government or for a “public interest” law firm.

No one seems to be talking about how there will be a serious drop in medical malpractice cases in the obamacare system

No one sues the VA and not the military doctors. It is just not done it is the government. We don’t sue them

That’s what will happen with obamacare

Has anyone checked enrollment at med schools lately? Or is that a secret like the border camps?

I know someone who works at a very expensive private school.

This person told me that one of their students is the adopted daughter of two male homosexuals.

At first, the boy was normal, but in third or fourth grade began to experience "gender" issues. Demanded to be treated as "male," to be referred to by means of male pronouns, etc. Demanded to be allowed to try out for boys sports teams, use boys bathroom, etc.

Student was accommodated in every way possible, except that the school drew the line at the boys' room and boys locker room stuff. Student was provided with her own separate private lockable bathroom and locker room. Caused lots of strange feelings.

My friend told me that the student graduated this past June. When my friend asked her/him what she/he was planning to do as a career, she said she was going to be a lawyer so she could fight for fair treatment for homosexuals. She said she had been discriminated against, like her fathers.

The “big education” bubble needs to be popped - law schools, business schools, grad schools, undergrad - all of it.

If we can graduate more engineers than lawyers it’ll be an improvement.

Sounds like secrecy to me

We’ve got a 20% unemployment rate for new grads. A 30K Average school loan debt a force of kids coming out of high school for whom the SATS were again just recently dumbed down, the promise of a very low salary for doctors who are expected to serve the 47% gimmefrestuffs at no cost, with the $17 T. In debt govt as their prospective employer, who works very closely with google who per Lou dobbs has access to our medical records, are reporting med school enrollment at an all time high

Tge average cost of 7 yrs of med education with internship is > $500K parents don’t even have a retirement plan

They’re not fooling you are they?

When our son took the bar exam in Minnesota in 2009 there were 600+ others taking it that day. Assuming most pass that would be 500+ new lawyers in Minnesota every year. Our son was fortunate to get a good job in Minneapolis, but many of his classmates from law school struggled to find work and have taken positions that will barely cover their school loans.

A US medical degree is still a golden ticket globally, regardless of the job market in the US. Enrollments may be up due to foreign applicants

And there are many scholarships and debt relief programs for doctors, especially if they are willing to work in a rural hospital for a few years or serve in the military.

Anyone who serves as an md in the military not only gets his school paid for by the military but would not dream of going into the military unless his school had been paid for by the military

If that is one of the two reasons med school admission is way up I am not buying it

There is no way med school admission is at an all time high because of commissioning into the military. Not when the military is at a force lower in no than prior to Pearl Harbor being attacked

That and foreign students are bringing med school applicants to n all time high?

Geeze. No uh uh

I found a few articles, 14 med schools increased their class sizes by 10% and 4 new med schools are enrolling their first class.

Easy math, since they always have more applicants than slots, merely increasing the number of slots available will always result in record enrollment levels.

Graduates of American med schools can take their degree to any country in the world and find work.

And while older doctors don’t want any part of the Obamacare foofaraw, many of those going into the field have drunk the kool aid while completing their bachelor’s degrees.

I don’t know.

There is an awful lot of kool aid we see kids getting out of school $60 grand in debt, car payments, electronics bills and no prospect for good paying employment.

Quadrupling that bill to work for a government health care system to earn, what? No more than what the military pays

Military doctors get a free ride and are paid low $100s per yr. they have always been notoriously unhappy in their work

I am not seeing it

Since “Big Education” is a money laundering device to feed money to Democrats, it’s likely to have a bullish future.

Want to guess which of the world’s countries has 70% of all the lawyers on the planet? You got it; the good old United States of America.

Like any other profession, we have been graduating lawyers into an economy that can support only a finite number. The legal schools have been exceeding that number. The jobs for newly minted attorneys in the numbers being graduated are not there. Lawyer schools are going to have to cut back numbers and tuition. Some schools may not survive.
