We now know when and where Minneapolis Police officers will soon be testing body cameras on the streets. The Minneapolis Police Department has confirmed that dozens of officers will test the body cameras in three precincts in late September or early October.
The tests will be done in precincts that generally have higher police activity. MPD says the body cams will be used for testing purposes only in the First Precinct downtown, the Fourth Precinct in North Minneapolis and the Fifth Precinct in southwest Minneapolis.
The city council set aside $400,000 to buy the cameras for the 2014 budget. Mayor Betsy Hodges made the body cam issue part of her campaign last year, and Mihnneapolis Police Chief Janee Harteau has been studying the issue for quite some time.
"I think we will be testing several different models of cameras to see what is best for us as a city and for the MPD," Minneapolis Public Safety Committee Chairman Blong Yang tells 5 EYEWITNESS News.
Yang says the cameras will help protect the public and officers on the streets and give citizens better protection if an officer ever crosses a line.

“Oops, forgot to turn on my camera...”
Without going totally anti-police, it does strike me as unusual that the police think they have a right to video tape anyone they like, but if you turn your phone camera on them, be prepared to buy a new phone.
If there is some way to ensure that they can’t erase the parts where they go too far and only use the parts that benefit them, this is a good idea.
Police and “body camera” have an entirely other meaning in southern New Mexico.

Woman, 24, faces wiretapping charge after recording her own arrest over ‘drunken dispute’

they’ll have to resort to kicking their own asses!
I would have to read the laws specific to wiretapping back there. Technically, this isn’t wire tapping at all. Wiretapping takes place when someone hooks up to phone lines and records a conversation.
What this woman did was record an audio track without all party’s permission. That is not wire tapping.
Tapping = tapping on to the phone line. That wasn’t done here.
Hardrive failed and then was shredded!
Cameras on cops, cameras in police cars, cameras in police stations...including in interrogation rooms. All good ideas.Cameras help protect cops *and* civilians and they can help in court cases too.
