US jobs report shows growth in part-time, low-wage work

The Obama administration seized on the jobs report to once again proclaim an economic turnaround. “This is one of the strongest reports we’ve seen since the end of the recession,” said Labor Secretary Thomas E. Perez. “There was good job creation in high-wage, mid-wage and low-wage positions. It was broad-based.”

In reality, jobs growth was again led by low-wage industries. The retail trade sector added 40,000 jobs, while the leisure and hospitality sector, which pays an average of $13.83 per hour, added 39,000. The health care sector added 34,000 jobs. Relatively higher paying sectors lagged behind. The manufacturing sector added only 16,000 jobs, while construction added only 6,000.

As a result, wages have remained stagnant. The average hourly wage for private sector workers increased by just six cents last month, and has increased only 2 percent over the past 12 months, less than the rate of inflation.

In fact, a disproportionate number of jobs created during the economic “recovery” pay less than $13 per hour, according to a report issued earlier this year by the National Employment Law Project. While US businesses have on the whole added 1.85 million low-wage jobs over the past six years, they have eliminated 1.83 million medium-wage (paying between $13 and $20 per hour) and high-wage (between $20 and $32) jobs, according to the report.

Obama's minions crow about the great news that all the jobs that were lost before have been restored to the economy! But of course, it's a lie. while the numbers might be there, those jobs tend to be part time, low paying jobs. Even Robert Reich said that the move toward part time work "might" have been in response to the regime's policies, in particular, the incredibly unaffordable "affordable care act."

Reich seems to scratch his head on that one, noting that Obamacare's mandates have been put off for the time being. Of course, as a Nobel Prize winning economist AND NY Slimes columnist, he wouldn't understand that businesses have to plan for the future.

A big part of the problem with illegal aliens taking low paying, part time jobs, is that these are entry level jobs, the jobs American youth used to take as a part of learning responsibility and the work ethic.

In my neighborhood, the typical "first job" sort of work at fast food places are all held to people who speak little or no English. At the local Hardees, the people taking orders are at least minimally bi-lingual (their native language is NOT English) and speak to the crew in back in Spanish.

Those wages will go even lower with the influx of central Americans competing for low wage jobs.

It does seem that Obama is on the same page as the Chamber of Commerce.

How does job creation affect growth? In January of this year 144,000 new jobs were created; in February, 222,000; and in March, 203,000. Yet during that quarter, GDP dropped by 2.9%.

All those new jobs failed to add to our total output of goods and services. The experts explained this by blaming our unusually harsh winter weather for the economic contraction.

So, here we are enjoying excellent summer weather, and last month only 288,000 new jobs were created — not a great deal more than February’s 222,000 when the Polar Vortex was supposedly bringing America’s economy to its knees. And almost all of June’s new jobs were part-time, meaning the new job holders produced only half the goods and services of full-time workers.

Yet Obama and the media are proclaiming a fabulous new era of economic growth throughout the land. That is absurd. To counteract the 2.9% GDP decline of the first quarter, the economy would have had to grow by 2.9% in the second quarter just to get us back to even. But that couldn’t have happened with the relatively modest growth in new jobs we’ve had over the past three months, many of them part-time.

Perhaps the jobs haven't been eliminated, but rather, they have had the wages depressed due to the surplus of labor.

Polar Vortex’s evil younger brother Hurricane Arthur just destroyed the recovery on the East Coast (in two days!).

It’s a sad day when you have to go to something called “the World Socialist Website” for an honest, candid look at the news.

Even worse, these were the jobs that unskilled American adults worked; they have been completely cut out of the American Dream with this amnesty nonsense. For the time being they are being bought off with welfare/food stamps/Section 8 housing, but that can’t last forever as their numbers swell.

This is certainly the case in the northeast, and has directly contributed to the 0 birth rate among whites here.

I can see the low wage jobs keeping the overall wage rates stagnant - I don't see regular jobs raising wages though - seems like wages ought to be in negative "growth" territory.
