We've Crossed A Tipping Point: Most Americans Now Receive Govt. Benefits (Happy Dependence Day!)
Forbes ^ | 7/02/2014 @ 4:45PM | Merill Matthews

Obamacare has pushed us over the entitlements tipping point. In 2011 some 49.2 percent of U.S. households received benefits from one or more government programs—about 151 million out of an estimated 306.8 million Americans—according to U.S. Census Bureau data released last October.

Currently, around 6 million to 7 million Americans who have signed up for Obamacare are receiving taxpayer-provided subsidies (though the administration’s numbers cannot be trusted, it’s all we have to work with). There are another 3 million who have signed up for Medicaid.

That means some 10 million Americans—or a total of about 161 million—are now getting government subsidies (though the final number might be somewhat lower since some may have been receiving benefits already).

Thus, perhaps 52 percent of U.S. households—more than half—now receive benefits from the government, thanks to President Obama. And Mr. Entitlement is just getting started. If Obamacare is not repealed millions more will join the swelling rolls of those dependent on government handouts.

How would you suggest that those I described above survive when they cannot work? Just die, right? You’re okay with someone who took a bullet or a bomb for you starving to death because then your tax burden will lighten? Conservatives, my ass.

I’ve always assymed that what motivated most veterans was taking a bullet for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Taking a bullet for freedom.

Two wrongs don’t make a right. Your contributions to SS were taken and spent by politicians. Many seniors are now in the awkward position of arguing that this wrong should be compounded by the wrong of taking an ever growing amount of the labor of younger people who never signed on to the system and were not in a position to oppose it and stop it before it became the growing financial monster it is today.

Do two wrongs make a right?

G*d Save America.

So the man who lost his leg in Iraq or the woman who lost her hearing & sight to an IED in Iraq along with the Vietnam vet who lost his sanity are all welfare moochers the same as the gal in the EBT video and the food stamp surfer?

Certainly not. I’d say they’re victims of the politicians who’ve screwed all of us. Actually, not completely victims in that older generations should’ve taken greater responsibility for never allowing this situation to get as bad as it is now and as bad as it’s going to be in the future.

Your contributions to SS...

Once again, I make the point that the word "contribution" is NOT accurate. The money was seized at the point of a gun, just as any income or property tax. But for some unknown reason you try to foist fault upon SS claimants, but give free rides to welfare queens and other assorted government deadheads. Speaking for myself, I would take a haircut on SS payments, but not without the participation of everyone else who is on the government tit. Why should we take the first bullet?

I hope these N.A.G.’s had counter protesters. Bringing the kid in to hold that sign was an especially classy touch.

I would also vote to do away with it. But only after all the welfare queens and overpaid retired government deadheads are trimmed back. They never paid in dime one.

I'm a retired postal employee. Maybe my pension, modest as it is, is overly generous, but I earned it in good faith, trying to perform my job to the best of my ability. I'll willingly make sacrifices in my benefits if that will truly help fellow citizens avoid privation and destitution.

Why do we have to transfer hate from one group to another? Young people hate older people on Social Security, the privately employed hate civil servants, the employed hate the unemployed, and everybody hates welfare recipients. We're all little people, pawns who have to play the game set up for us by "elites" in government and business. Why do we hate the players when we should hate the game?

Again, you missed the point.

If it was up to me, vets would be paid pensions promised, SS beneficiaries too, all that stuff.

The point is the money is or will be gone soon. They’re making it up to you now by printing money out of thin air. This is going to end badly.

I don’t want anyone to not get what they deserve, but what I want and reality don’t even have a passing acquaintance at this point.

The point is, if you take money from the government, prepare for the day when it will stop. Because the cupboard is bare, capische?

His was generic, yours was personal.

You are taking everything on this thread personally, when it is not intended that way.

“A taste of the strife to come.”

It’s obvious from these threads than even seniors that call themselves conservative will vote for the devil himself to make sure they get what they think they deserve. And the hell with the future of this country -and their own children and grandchildren.

Evil times are coming, surely.

“Yep, that’s why it wont be, until the system collapses under its own weight. Have to say I’m dismayed, but not surprised, by what I’ve read by some here by people making arguments that sound more like they come from Dems/libs, not Freepers - it just goes to show the Dems have won and we will not have any real choices in presidential elections besides Dems/RINOs/Republicat-Demublicans until the system collapses and resets.

Prepare accordingly.”

I am, but I just hope I get 8 more months. I sold a mountain cabin retreat in order to escape Mexifornia, but won’t make the complete move until next march. In the meantime, I feel like I’m living in limbo, and at risk.

I’m guessing the collapse will be more like the Weimar Republic, a slow agonizing death instead of an overnight crash.

What’s your take?

I didn’t realize you knew Tennessee so well. Sorry to have lectured. ;)

I’m just excited about ‘my people’ that I have never met. And only been through the area once - in the dark!

You must enjoy your work. Mind if I ask what you do? I’d guess an attorney. One of the good ones.

Libertarians should change the election outcomes in NH. Should be interesting - I’ll pay attention next time.

Coming from a ruined area, the thing I dislike about libertarians is just what I hate about liberals - they want amnesty and no borders, yet aren’t the ones that live in the crime-ridden, disease-filled, entitlement-grabbing areas that they create with their policies. It’s that hypocrisy that makes me seethe. But I think once I move back into the U.S., I’ll relax on the invasion issue. Out of sight, out of mind, you know?

You’re lucky to be in Virginia. Beautiful state. I hope she turns red again. We thought she’d be too much like CA, with the cities outvoting our SW rural area.

Maybe, I mean, I sometimes think I’m an idiot for believing what we were told about what America is in grade school, but in this case, feel free to point to one thing I’ve said in this thread that’s wrong.

Cant predict the future. Dont know how things are going to unfold. I only know that the path we’re on is unsustainable and things are going to get ugly.

They say that character is revealed when faced with the abyss. Well, we’re going to learn some things, maybe some surprising things (maybe not all that surprising to some of us), about the true character of this country.

None of us should have ever been in a position to decide who should “make sacrifices” and who should “avoid privation and destitution.” It’s almost the very definition of socialism. But that’s exactly where we are right now.

Like you said, it’s the “game”. It’s the system that’s pitted us against one another, compelling even honorable veterans to argue that because their property was taken from them “at the end of a gun” (and spent), it’s ok to do the same to others who, with time, are going to be in an even weaker position to shoulder that burden than they were.

My main point is, it should never have come to this. And the point of the article is, that’s where most of the country is right now, so the system isn’t going to change without a collapse/reset.

Roosevelt and the Dems that followed him knew what they were doing. Like Obama said, they won.

And, as a sidenote, their victory on immigration promises to be even bigger - they’re going to degrade the character of the electorate even more than they already have.

G*d Save America. Hope everyone had a good Dependence Day.

I don’t take Rand Paul seriously - he’s another TV poser who, in a real crunch, will take the easy/convenient road rather than make the tough decisions needed to improve the country’s condition long-term.

Amazing, isn't it. 50,000,000 and counting...could have been living, breathing Americans, keeping that scheme going, consuming, working, purchasing, paying taxes, being productive....and now, the government is importing people it says we 'need' (who do not understand our language, much less the seminal documents and the foundational philosophies of this country--they just see free sh*t).

The selfsame liberals who insisted on the slaughter are the inheritors/instigators of the Ponzi scheme implosion, partly created by their political progenitors, and accomplished by the horror steadfastly maintained by them to be a "right".

Without the population base, with longer life spans (of course, Obamacare will help 'alleviate' that problem), without a healthy middle-class driven economy, and with ample opportunity for fraud, the system is doomed.

But there is more to population than numbers, there is a cultural component which differs greatly from those raised here to be proud of their country and those who came here to take what they could--who have no loyalty to this nation and no roots within its culture.

For five years, the looting has gone unabated, and the economic vultures are circling.

Now, Obama has called in swarms of maggots to infest and devour...
