Conventional political wisdom says the collapse of talks over immigration reform legislation in Washington this week won't hurt Republicans at the ballot box until at least the presidential election in 2016. Miguel Valenzuela is on a mission to prove the conventional wisdom wrong.
Valenzuela, a 27-year-old former US marine, lives in Colorado, one of a handful of battleground states where a booming Latino population means the issue of immigration reform could play a major role in this November's midterm elections. In 2008, the Latino vote helped push Democrat Mark Udall to victory in the Senate, in a good year for his party. This November, in whats widely expected to be a bad year for Democrats, Udall will almost certainly need the community to turn out for him once again if he is to hold on to his seat.
Republican Senate candidate Cory Gardner is doing what he can to neutralise the backlash from those who blame his party for blocking legislation, proposed with the intent to provide a path to citizenship for 11 million undocumented immigrants in the country even suggesting that military veterans should receive automatic citizenship in recognition of their service.
But Valenzuela, a US citizen already, is not concerned about his own immigration status; he's worried about his mother.

Between Immigration and the birth control nonsense, the Republicans need to DESPERATELY get ahead on these messages that the Democrats are spouting.
Agreed. Conservatives are constantly on defense, which is why we lose most of the arguments. We need to play offense much more often if we hope to gain any ground.
Appointment requests for noncitizen Colorado license overwhelm system
Those wanting to make an appointment to get the new driver’s license for noncitizens overwhelmed the system Tuesday the first day appointments were being scheduled.
Officials from the Department of Motor Vehicles did not answer specific questions Tuesday but said the website for appointments had approximately 60,000 hits in less than an hour Tuesday.
The licenses, a result of Senate Bill 251 approved by the Colorado legislature in 2013, will allow those who do not have a valid social security number including immigrants in the country illegally and others in the country with temporary legal status to obtain a driver’s license starting next month if they can prove they live in Colorado.
I hate to point out the obvious, but didn't these families voluntarily rip themselves apart when they decided it was too much bother to come and stay here legally?
A BS article filled with misinformation and outright lies.
Agreed... we need to get ahead.
Colorado Ping ( Let me know if you wish to be added or removed from the list.)
I used to laugh at the Guardian rags before the Internet age while it had one leftist wacko article after another scribbled on their front pages while they sat in newsstands.
I’m looking forward to meeting Cory Gardner at an event here in La Plata County on July 6. He’ll get an ear full from me and others I know who will be there.
So far, Gardner seems to be doing a good job against Udall.
