Iraqi security officials have said the country has received the first batch of fighter jets that it had ordered from Russia to help battle gains by a militant group, BBC News reported on Sunday.

According to the report, the officials said “five second-hand Sukhoi attack aircraft would enter service within a few days, and that more were on their way.”

Iran is secretly flying surveillance drones over Iraq and sending military equipment there to help Baghdad in its fight against Sunni insurgents, The New York Times reported Wednesday.

A "small fleet" of Ababil drones was deployed to the Al Rashid airfield near Baghdad, the newspaper said on its website, citing anonymous U.S. officials.

Don't know if any Iraqi pilots are trained on this airplane. It may be Iraq will use contract pilots from Russia or former Eastern Bloc.

My guess would the SU-25 or SU-27. Iraq used to fly both during Saddam’s regime.

See, Iraq pleads for help, Russia responds immediately with combat aircraft because it's their way of getting a foot in the door, smart and strategic. Russia jumps into what was, the US realm of influence.

In the meantime Obama is “considering” doing this, that and maybe some consultations by John Kerry. He insists Malaki must make government reforms and blah, blah, blah before condition A, B and C. Who is thinking with his butt cheeks and who with his brain?

The bottom line is that Russia is reliable and can be an ally when one is in need, instantly. Putin is there for your military hardware needs. Obama? Where is Obama? Iraq WAS under control with the assistance of the USA, now?

The big problem is that America's allies are all watching the US balk, stutter, knees shake, saliva dripping out mouth and curled up in her shell like a mollusk.

Israel has been taking note since 2008 and that is why they feel Obama does not have their back. But, you got to laugh now when Obama & Co. say “all options are on the table”. What table might that be? A Ping-pong table?

What a sad and depressing joke.

I read they are SU-24. Requires a pilot and weapons system officer. Iraq had 25 or so in 2003, but they were flown to Iran and parked. My guess would be Iranian crew, but Syria flys a few of these, but may not have the available crews. Hell, could be Russian or former Soviet block, but my money is on Iranian.

Could Russia and Iran be in some sort of deal to invade Iraq and take over where the US left off?

Russia can deliver because having no industry but military products it makes and inventories war planes. Russia took the planes off the shelf, collected the money and delivered the goods.

It is mercenary motivation with political overtones

I’m sure it will be Russian Pilots just like in Syria.

Russia probably will slaughter ISIS in Iraq. That way they can secure Syria.

The Russians recognize a rare strategic opportunity to slaughter Saudi financed jihadists. Remember they support Assad because if Syria becomes a fundamentalist ISIL state, it would be a sanctuary and base for the jihadists that are causing mayhem and instability in southern Russia. The Russians know that the ISIL fighters are dangerously overextended. They have Hezbollah and Syrian air harassing their rear, supply depots and strafing their convoys, ferocious Kurds are on their center flank anxious to seize more territory, and the Iraqi army bolstered by enthusiastic Shi’ite militia has stopped their advance outside of Baghdad. Given the right strategic leadership, logistics and coordination, a counterattack would put ISIL in a vise like killing field. Given their conduct, they would be slaughtered mercilessly.

Russia has significant investment in Iraq’s southern (Shia region) Oil fields. They also have a reason to keep this conflict active, as it raises the world price per barrel of oil which only a buck or two increase per barrel is huge revenue to the Russian government.

I believe the Iranian want solid influence in Iraq as well as Syria and other countries, however it would be very messy to get involved obviously’ in a Shia-Sunni conflict. Iran has it’s own quiet internal disruptions to include a southern province which has heavy Sunni population, which they would not want to incite.

I think the US and the west should be invested in termination of the ISIS with prejudice. The difficulty in Iraq is that so many of the Sunni tribes in Iraq are riding on the ISIS wave to achieve not just a military advantage, but a clear political win of degradation of any potential for Maliki to continue as PM. Which the politics of who will form the next government is now going on. So...our keeping out of this mess to avoid upsetting the Sunni tribes in the political arena is the better game. At the end of this the Sunni tribes will cast of the ISIS when they are no longer required or wanted. I spent a number of years in Iraq and the Middle East, and there are not many truly “pious” who do not smoke, drink and have other vices. They won’t want the ISIS or Al Qaeda when they think they win the political equality.

What you say is 100% true but the fact is, is that they swoop right in and do what they feel they need to do to expand their influence in a very immediate way.

The Russkies have been doing this since 1917.

They are practical devils and at this rate, given THIS RESET US President, it's just a matter of time before Soviet, oops, I mean Russian naval forces drop anchor off, America's Eastern seaboard and Pacific coasts while ISIS in Iraq/Syria conquer all of America's (former) allies except...Israel.

Tiny Israel will try to hold off the Caliphate Whores, oops, I mean hoards. The US MUST help halt ISIS before they topple Jordan.
