Thousands go without water as Detroit cuts service for nonpayment
LA Times ^ | 28 June 14 | Alana Semuels

Posted on 06/29/2014 4:54:35 AM PDT by SkyPilot

Nicole Hill holds up her past-due water bill at her home in Detroit. Her water has been off for about six weeks.

It has been six weeks since the city turned off Nicole Hill's water.

Dirty dishes are piled in the sink of her crowded kitchen, where the yellow-and-green linoleum floor is soiled and sticky. A small garbage can is filled with water from a neighbor, while a bigger one sits outside in the yard, where she hopes it will collect some rain. She's developed an intricate recycling system of washing the dishes, cleaning the floor and flushing the toilet with the same water.

"It's frightening, because you think this is something that only happens somewhere like Africa," said Hill, a single mother who is studying homeland security at a local college. "But now I know what they're going through — when I get somewhere there's a water faucet, I drink until my stomach hurts."

Hill is one of thousands of residents in Detroit who have had their water and sewer services turned off as part of a crackdown on customers who are behind on their bills. In April, the city set a target of cutting service to 3,000 customers a week who were more than $150 behind on their bills. In May, the water department sent out 46,000 warnings and cut off service to 4,531. The city says that cutting off water is the only way to get people to pay their bills as Detroit tries to emerge from bankruptcy — the utility is currently owed $90 million from customers, and nearly half the city's 300,000 or so accounts are past due.

I wasn't talking about whether you were defending the Woman or not. She is just another whiner, like half the adult population in this country, period.

Notice how their dire circumstances are never blamed on their Messiah? They only attach blame if there is a Republican President. You know, just like the guy that hates Black People, according to Kanye West.

I was responding to your accusatory comments toward other FReepers who according to you do not know there is a “depression” going on and should somehow feel sympathy for a person who caused her own misery. The Woman in question undoubtedly Voted to continue the “depression”.

As I pointed out, there are many of your fellow FReepers who do without and don't blame others for their circumstance. You never see them getting sympathetic slobbering write ups in the L.A. Times.

Reread my Late Mother's comment and tell me you disagree.

“...but they need to eliminate the massive debt first.”

That reminds me of the photo on the other thread and your earlier post regarding unions, etc. The one old guy was carrying a sign about the water while wearing his “Don’t touch my Pension” t-shirt.

Detroit, and this issue of water, will be multiplied 200 million times when it finally reaches a head all across America when people find out the till is dry, and the government doesn’t/can’t keep their promises.

Nobody loves it but its why I say that the Detroit problem is one that Michigan and private sources need to fix as an example for the rest of the country to follow when the crap begins to fly.

I’ve seen it. Shoot, they’ve already come out for you! I can assure you I’m not lazy and I have a degree in a respected scientific field.. But I barely make any $$$ due to lack of jobs. It is a fact. I’d even go to North Dakota but I don’t think they’d have me. Lol

That’s fine.

I found your original Post very accusatory towards your fellow FReepers. It read like something a Liberal would Post on Yahoo. I responded as I would to any Liberal.

You disagree, so be it. I won’t “blabber” to you anymore.

the depression does NOT affect those getting freebies and not working....its only affecting those trying to work for a living....

the so called "poor" all get regular raises in their bennies and infact, the govt keeps thinking of new ones to give them....

sadly, these people use little children as their props for begging...

Nicole seems to have enough money for the hair salon, tattoos, cosmetics and manicures.

I’d like Detroit to be taken over by a huge group of Amish, or Russian immigrants, or even Mexicans....the land there would be great for orchards and farms...people could be happy there and prosperous like they were 50 yrs ago...

It goes on all the time here. Maybe they confuse lazy inner city people with unemployed folks. I don’t know. Yesterday, they were out to destroy some old vet who gave away a muffin at a Cracker Barrel. I think they compared him to Edward Snowden, Kim Philby and Cary Grant in “To Catch a Thief.” Hilarious, really!

in defense of Africans, there are some pretty amazing African immigrants in this country....

One of my twitter friends is a Nigerian immigrant who came here as a toddler. Her parents are still together and she is unlike most American blacks in a lot of ways. She thinks the American fixation with race is just plain stupid.
