Mississippi’s revolution may be just starting

JACKSON, Miss. — Don’t breathe that sigh of relief just yet, Mississippi.

As the tumultuous fight for Sen. Thad Cochran’s seat in Washington hurtles toward a close on Tuesday, this bitter reality has started to dawn on Republicans here: The larger battle for power within the Mississippi Republican coalition is only just beginning.

In this deeply Republican, nearly one-party state, the race between Cochran and conservative challenger Chris McDaniel has torn open long-developing divisions within the GOP power structure. The six-term senator and his allies, led by former Gov. Haley Barbour and an army of entrenched figures in Washington and the state capital, have maintained a tight grip on political power in Mississippi since it became a Republican state in the first place.

McDaniel’s campaign has challenged that edifice of party orthodoxy. A confrontational conservative who made a name for himself as a sharp-elbowed member of the Legislature, McDaniel has been surrounded in his race by a throng of ideological fellow travelers in the state Senate. They ride on his campaign bus and speak at his rallies. Like McDaniel, they have campaigned against the establishment in Jackson and enjoy support of the tea party — and they may set their sights on higher office as early as next year.

I’d crawl over broken glass to vote there today if I still lived there.

If Cochran wins tonight with the help of RAT votes in a GOP primary,
there will be hell to pay to those local politicians who supported Cochran
and this desperate act.
And rightfully so.

Win or lose this week, conservatives here predict that Mississippi’s state elections in 2015 will bring another reckoning for the party. The reality that McDaniel has come so close to unseating Cochran may herald a larger-scale shift in culture for a state where seniority has long been king.

no way... McDaniel must win this one... it does not usually pay in the short-run to just come close... which, in turn, dampers the long-run...

It needs to dawn on the GOPe that this is a generational shift as much as it is ideological. This is the best it will get for GOPe from now on. Then every election from now on it will get worse. You can’t out wait the tea party. Especially when the debt is increasing, and that is what fuels the tea party.

I used to think I was so smart voting for a Demorat or a Pubbie until I found out that good Demorats vote with Obama.

Lt. Governor Tate Reeves is for amnesty and thinks Conservatives are too stupid to figure out how he killed our illegal immigrant bill. I supported reeves and he said he was against illegal-immigration, I’ll not support him for anything ever again. Too many of our elected Conservative Republicans in Mississippi don’t understand the meaning of the word, it’s just an obligatory slogan to them.

We refer to Reeves as the ‘redheaded bill gates’.

He’s slimy.

Won’t vote for him for anything after he killed that bill either. Wouldn’t vote for him for dogcatcher. If he needs votes at some point in the future, maybe all the ‘new citizens’ will vote for him?
