didnt some guy just recently predict a big earthquake was coming?
There is always a big earthquake coming...somewhere.
The U.S. Geological Survey first said the magnitude of the quake was a 7.1. It was recorded at 12:53 p.m. local time Monday afternoon, and centered about 13 miles southeast of Little Sitkin Island.
The USGS has since upgraded the magnitude to a 8.0.
Accounts of the destruction of the Scotch Cap Lighthouse back in the 40s are horrifying. Lets hope there’s no tsunami from this shaker.
Depth changed to 68.4 miles. This was a DEEP one.
NWS Alaska Region 3m
Successful evacuations have occurred in St. Paul, St. George, Adak and Atka. No tsunami reported in Shemya yet.
Godzilla visiting Deadliest catch set?

We’ve confirmed that the earthquake was felt strongly on Adak and Shemya, both over 200 miles away. No reports of damage yet.
Earlier today: 7.2 magnitude earthquake rattles New Zealand’s Kermadec Islands.

UPDATE: City manager of Adak, Alaska: 140 people evacuating to high-ground shelter after Tsunami Warning
Obama supporters in Florida are concerned about the upcoming tsunami waves. They will likely start driving south to Cuba in preparation.
Well .. the Pacific Rim continues to light up.
All these recently intense and deep earthquakes ... I wonder if there is a connection to the shifting of Earth’s magnetic poles? ...
Swarm satellite (ESA) measurements made the last 6 months show a dramatic decline over North and South America with a strengthening of the Earth’s magnetic field over the southern Indian Ocean. (Below June 2014 image by ESA’s Swarm Satellite.)
Magnetic North continues to move towards Siberia where a large magma rise under the crust has been occurring for the past three decades. This new picture reinforces the concept that the Earth’s magnetic poles are building up to a switch. Over the last 200 years, the magnetic field has weakened by about 15%. Over the last 20 million years, the poles have reversed on average about every 200,000 to 300,000 years. But the last pole reversal was 780,000 years ago, so Earth is long overdue for a pole change.
Not far from Japan.
i wonder what the after affects would be if an underground 10.0 struck Alaska.
Isn’t almost all of St Paul harbor pointed pretty much exactly at the epicenter of this quake?
Too bad Congress has not been moved to Rat Island.
Yeah that might be point there
Beside he is tired from running around the world promote the Godzilla movie
Not that I'm complaining. But nothing ever seems to really seems to come from these tsunami alerts. The two big tsumamis I remember were the one in Japan and the one in that Sri Lanka around Christmastime about 10 years ago. And I don't remember any warning about those - they just happened all of a sudden.
DART station 46408 is showing a 20+ Meter pulse in the open ocean southeast of the quake, with an even greater wave differential.
Not sure if that means anything, but it is interesting to the untrained observer.
At 2 p.m. local time, Adak, Alaska reported water leaving the harbor, according to the National Weather Service.
