The IRS Had a Contract With an Email Backup Company
reason.com ^ | June 20, 2014 | By Peter Suderman

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) said it can't provide emails sent between 2009 and 2011 that were requested by congressional investigators because of hard drive crashes.

The agency said that emails stored on dead drives were lost forever because its email backup tapes were recycled every six months, and employees were responsible for keeping their own long-term archives.

The IRS had a contract with email backup service vendor Sonasoft starting in 2005, according to FedSpending.org, which lists the contract as being for "automatic data processing services." Sonasoft's motto is "email archiving done right," and the company lists the IRS as a customer.

In 2009, Sonasoft even sent out a Tweet advertising its work for the IRS...

Here is their 10-K for 2008

http://www.secinfo.com/d151E3.ssb.htm

Some key excerpts:

“We released the Email Archiving solution in the fourth quarter of 2008 to address Corporate Compliance and eDiscovery issues.”

“We have patent applications pending for two aspects of our functionality that are unique. They are:
- Web Enabled Exchange Server Standby Solution Using Mailbox Level Replication
- Exchange Server Standby Solution Using Mailbox Level Replication with Crossed Replication between Two Active Exchange Servers”

“The system will leverage journaling capabilities of Mail Server to capture all emails coming in and going out of the Microsoft Exchange Server and archive it to Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Server and this whole process will be transparent to existing users of the Mail System. It will utilize Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Full Text Catalog Search capabilities to provide a very sophisticated search engine to discover and retrieve emails for litigation or company’s regulatory compliance perspective. The system will also encrypt and compress email messages to avoid tempering and reduce space.”

“Major Product Features

- Automatically archive corporate email into one storage area
- Reduce email storage requirements which dramatically reduce Backup/Recovery time
- Migrate old PST files stored on client machines
- Set up email retention and categorization policies
- Helps comply with Sarbanes-Oxley Act
- Collect and archive emails in one geographical location
- Audit Archived emails
- Access emails from any location through a browser
- Advanced email search and ‘Saved Search’ capabilities
- One-Click Restore a single email to a mailbox”

Look at that one above - access e-mails from any location through a browser. Heck they should get the IT guy in front of the committee and get him to do the search live.

But why do I have a sneaking suspicion the IRS stopped using Sonasoft a few years ago and ordered them to destroy all archives... I have no data to back that up (heh heh) but it wouldn’t surprise me...

The whole thing is just BS. They are relying on the clueless-ness of Congress.
Backups are multi-layered and there is a long retention time. If this were a Republican WH, the media would be bringing out experts to dismiss this scenario.

They simply won’t have it.

It will be lost - overwritten, whatever.

No.. that excuse would prove they did something illegal and likely a violation of their contract with the US Government.

The proper answer is..

“the data was never sent”

Did anyone ask about the servers, back up tapes, etc?

If someone doesn’t start asking then this whole thing is just for show.

Paul Ryan had more than one opening but was more concerned about getting his speech into a sound byte.

Good point...The question is why, and who is the company no one has ever heard of before today, that did this support work for the IRS...

Who works there, what are their political affiliations, background, etc etc etc...

The can of worms is right there in front of the schmuckatellies in these committees...

Somebody just needs to bring a can opener...

Easy breezy...Piece of cake...”Get ‘r dun!”

(If they are convicted they’ll be pardoned in the last half hour of Obama’s presidency. Probably with every black criminal in the system.)

Even if these sleezebags are pardoned, they are still subject to civil action (I think). In a civil trial, discovery could reveal the rest of the sleezebags involved. And nail the enire bunch with RICO.

/wishful thinking

1. June 2011, Rep Camp sends letter to Lerner inquiring about Tea Party targeting.

2. Ten days later Lerner’s hard drive conveniently crashes. Tells IT guy, “Ho hum stuff just happens.”

3. Of the 100,000 plus employees of the IRS only one employee (of more than 100k) in 2011 had a hard drive crash that resulted in complete loss of data. And just happens to be the primary employee under investigation.

4. The IRS hides the destruction of hard drive throughout investigation. Only informing when drive is subpoenaed.

5. Unless Lerner was running a mail server locally on her laptop (highly doubtful) a hard drive crash would never result in loss of email in an exchange server environment.

6. After hard drive loss, a networked laptop does not just install a fresh copy of an OS via CD and send user on way to start over. And nothing else. The laptop is restored from server level with user profile including all privileges to file and print and email, security tokens, data, etc. Where’s subpoena for the help desk logs showing who what where for new hard drive install?

7. In June of 2011 we know 7 people had hard drive crashes, all conveniently part of investigation, all somehow losing emails (which almost never happens). How many other employees out of 100k in IRS also had hard drive crashes resulting in loss of email during month of June? Bet none.

These IRS Gov employees are all most likely AFGE union members like the VA crooks are except the top dog or two who are political appointees. Yesterday I happened to look up two VA Directors of major hospitals. I kid you not they were both former nurses and one had only an MSN in nursing. The other had a Devry degree, but; it was not in management, business, or hospital admin. Neither had an MBA nor any military background like Army Medical Service Corp which is usually the branch that runs the Army hospitals. It appears that the Gov has gone out of its way to hire women and Hispanic males into the senior civil and federal service super grades.

In January 2010 Obama attacks Supreme Court justices while delivering June State of the Union about the Citizens United Decision,it was reported that he was livid about it,republicans were going to be able to raise money!
March 2010 the IRS begins to target Tea party trumps, harrasing private citizens,in emails already released Lois Lerner calls the tea party DANGEROUS,she discusses with other individuals about prosecuting these groups,in 2011 she destroys her hard drive, the other six people involved in the investigation have their hard drives crash,we find out about that, last monday.
In 2013 Lerner plants a question to be asked about tea party targeting by her agency, but it was only rogue employees in cincinatti.
This entire episode was instigated by Obama because of the Supreme court decision.

Even if she *did* take the drive on such a trip, someone like DriveSavers can probably get some if not all of the data back.

In June of 2011 we know 7 people had hard drive crashes, all conveniently part of investigation,

That is what is being reported by the lame-stream and is all too convenient and is all a contrived lie to cover-up for the criminal obama crowd. Truly do hope Congress is not useless for if Congress proves to be useless is going to send a clear message across America to those that love Freedom (imho).

Congress should call in the big heads of the storage companies and find out if they are backing up the IRS and if they are, if it is possible to retrieve the email of an individual.

Since the IRS spent $898,590,976 from 2000 to 2012 with IBM, surely some of that went to backup and storage.

The House green lighted presidential criminality when it did nothing of substance over voter intimidation in Philly 2008, nor over Fast and Furious.

Since then, Obama has accumulated executive branch powers that no election can remedy.

Concern over our constitution and country is insufficient reason to challenge Obama. No opposition will emerge until it is in the personal, electoral interest of a majority of House members.
