Letter: Polygamy should be decriminalized
The Las Vegas Sun ^ | June 6, 2014 | Leslie Jacobs

When you look at world history, and especially biblical history, you will find that polygamy has been an accepted and honorable way of life. Many beloved prophets of the Old Testament were polygamists, and Abraham was a friend of God, all while having many wives. Polygamy was once a lifestyle accepted by all.

For Christians of 2000 years ago, polygamy was stopped by the Roman empire.

Paul, in his letter to the church in Rome, said, “A bishop should be the husband of one wife.” He was simply telling them to obey the law of the land. Roman law is alive and well today in America, and we all know what happened to the Roman Empire.

It’s very unfortunate what has happened in Colorado City, Ariz., and in other states. It has given polygamy a terrible name and image....

I can’t see poligamy any worse than gay-marriage unless taxpayer’s paid child support is part of it.

I do not care about the history of polygamy. It is a primitive practice not to be sanctioned by a civilized society. I put it on the same level as slavery. All through history up to this day man has practiced slavery. Should it be sanctioned? No.

Polygamy is the enslavement of women. The women who participate in it might get a thrill with it. They are still slaves to the male of the roost. The same with those slave women picking cotton. They might have had a laugh and a thrill working their fingers to the bone for their slave masters. Some even were sex slaves for the master—for a laugh and a thrill. That does not justify it.

You surely sound communist these way, especially dragging slavery into topic.
Who are we to decide for consenting adults?
Commies could use exactly your arguments to rant against natural marriage.
A lot of them arguing that it is nothing but a slavery for woman.

It is not that I’m all for a poligamy, but it is surely the least perversion comparing to sodomy, bestiality and especially pedophilia.

Don’t compare me to Commies for the comparison I used. Polygamy is another way to enslave women. I will not stand idly by and let Muslim sympathizers ram polygamy down our cultural throats.

There’s benign vileness? (Remember, being “vile” means to be utterly morally depraved.)

Other than for church leaders, where does the Bible speak out against polygamy?

Ephesians 5:31. Unambiguous. All other verses of that chapter in context show a marriage of one man and one woman, not limited to church leaders.

That’s aside from the example in Genesis 2:24, where God gave Adam one wife, not multiple wives. Noah also had one wife, as did his three sons have one wife each.

Also the injunction is made specially for kings, not to marry many wives, in Deuteronomy 17:17. (The later examples of David and Solomon, especially Solomon, show what happen when that’s ignored.)

I understand that many claim for "sin" because something offend their sensibilities, but I think you take it too far. Ephesians is talking about a relationship, but doesn't condemn polygamy. Adam being given but one wife is lame. Deuteronomy also says kings shouldn't amass too many horses or too much silver - the intent of the passage you cite is obviously telling kings to stay real and grounded lest they become so disconnected that they cannot be effective/just rulers.

I don't understand why folks want to marry more than one other mate. I don't count the mere act as sinful - the reason it is done may make it sinful, but not across-the-board.

I'm far more concerned with the homosexual agenda's destruction of family values. I won't fight it, but I also won't defend it. It is what it is and it will only get worse and will not go away. If you believe in the Bible, and that God has already ordained that the world will become a moral cesspool before Jesus comes back to set things right, then you should also know that we can refrain from indulging, but we cannot stop what is happening. He will have His way and we can only tend to ourselves and those we have relationships with.

In prescribing monogamy, there is the condemnation of polygamy. Unless Mohammed’s habits in this vein are not worthy of condemnation?

The gays may attack family values of their own volition and their own agenda, but the no-fault-divorce crowd and polygamists attacked them first.

It’s not implied that we can stop what is happening—even the Bible says we don’t have the power to stop it (2 Timothy 3:13), but there is one who will.

Liberals quoting the Bible? LOL

I guess they skipped over the verses about homosexuality.

I agree. We richly deserve God’s judgment.

I believe Obama is that judgment.

Alas, he’s not kidding. On FR we saw him give up the “I’d hit it” line for a long time, but he got badgered so long and hard about it he picked it back up again.

Obama is not the Judgment.

Obama is the warning ... the choice.

And America chose corruption, death,
disease, fraud, and extinction.

It will just take a court ruling in a case brought up by a Muslim. Heck, this country allows them to send their teen girls back home to get part of their body hacked off, this topic is child’s play.

Matthew 19:5 (almost...)
and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wives, and the group will become a whole lot of flesh’

A bunch of freeloading clowns pumping out their spawn for the taxpayers to support and raise for them.

we already have this,

What difference would ONE sperm donor compared to many of them make?

It is way past time to change our symbol from the mighty eagle to the lowly COWBIRD.
