Maybe I’m out in left field, but... both entities withdraw from a union that’s supposed to be firmly fixed, and both groups withdraw due to idiological differences...?

It’s more dangerous than that. I’ll grant some similarities, but the EU has a USSR-style government if not any of the surveillance state or size of secret police it wants under the Stockholm Program.
And characterizing Britain as the South is a bit specious.
