IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. -- A man charged with multiple sex crimes involving a teenage girl he met online has turned himself in.
Investigators arrested 27-year-old Jarred Ashley Workman late Monday afternoon. Hes charged with 11 counts of statutory rape and five counts of statutory sex offense.
Iredell County authorities say Workman met a 14-year-old girl on social media. They chatted for about a month, and then agreed to meet in the woods near the teens home in the Love Valley area of Iredell County.
Investigators say the teen invited Workman inside the house where he set up residence in the girls closet for five days. The girls mother had no idea he was there.
During the day he was either in her closet or in her bedroom, and when she would come home from school or on the weekend or whatever, he would come out on evenings, said Det. Lt. Bill Hamby with the Iredell County Sheriffs Office.
The five day span, from April 27 to May 2, is when Hamby says Workman had sex with the teen several times.
The teens mother found Workman hiding in the closet when she went to put some of her daughters belongings in there. Workman took off running, Hamby said.
Investigators tracked Workman through the woods behind the teens house, but his trail ran cold along Highway 115, where he might have gotten a ride.
Workman dropped his wallet and cell phone along the way. Its how deputies identified him. Plus, investigators say, the teen told them his name.
Part of the investigation includes Workmans social media history.
He has a handful of prior arrests.
For these predators to prey on these children, its real frustrating, Hamby said.
Its why Hamby and Iredell County resident Barbara OBrien say parents need to monitor their childrens social media accounts and activities.
People are really afraid to do that with their kids, OBrien said, But this is an example of why people need to.
If convicted, Workman faces up to life in prison without parole.
Heck, people get less than life for murder.
What's in your closet?
Probably no dad in the house. Just a guess.
SHOES, lots of pairs of shoes.
Based on the headline, I thought it was R. Kelley.
when i was 12 or 13 years old, my niece (who is 10 months younger than i) and i found a cigarette--it belonged to my uncle who would sometimes stay at our home... we decided that we would smoke it that night when everyone went to sleep... we had planned to do it at midnight, but we fell asleep... at 2 a.m. my niece wakes me up and says, "let's do it." so we quietly sneaked to the bathroom, lit the cigarette and my mom came knocking on the bathroom door as we were taking our first puffs... she could smell the damn cigarette! we were caught...
SO TRUE!!
Thanks for your story--it rings SO REAL and TRUE to me. Parents are the adults and had us "all figured out" USUALLY before we even made a move. Lol.
You're here, proof that you grew up RIGHT! ;o)
5 days in her closet???
What did he eat??? Did he have pizza delivered or did she bring him a doggy bag from the kitchen??
Did he use the bathroom??? How long was this going to go on???
I see a movie made for TV from this one.
Sounds like the first and only time I tried to skip school. MOM caught me within an hour and took me to school. Dad had me fixing watergaps on the ranch for 2 week’s.
Dad? Where's Dad? Just asking.
Oh, does your story bring back memories. One morning I got up and immediately smelled cigarette smoke in the upstairs hall. I knew it had to be my thirteen year old daughter so I knocked on her door, checked it and sure enough, the door was locked. I told her to open the door, and after a few seconds, she did. After I entered her room, I took another few seconds looking for the cigarette because I could still smell the smoke and see it in the air. Finally I saw the smoke, coming out from under her pillow on the bed!
hahaha!
i remember being afraid of my what my daddy was going to say when he came home from work later that day... i had gone back to bed, so i did not see him in the morning... anyway, he called me into the kitchen... i sat across from him at the kitchen table, and he talked to me... he reminded me, "weren't you the one who got me to quit smoking cigars?" i was! i used to take his newly opened pack of Dutch Masters and hide them so he would not smoke them... he might smoke one or two from a pack before i would get rid of it...
