For the past three decades, the American Academy of Pediatricssome 62,000 members stronghas been an outspoken voice on the issue of gun control, a position that has landed it on the NRAs (admittedly very long) list of enemies. In 1992, the AAP issued its first policy statement supporting a handgun and assault weapons ban, making it the first public health organization to do so, and it has long recommended that doctors talk about gun safety with parents. Since the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in December 2012, the AAP has stepped up attempts to educate parents about gun safety around children.
But as the fight over gun rights grows ever more virulent at the national level, the AAP and individual doctors have quietly begun to take a softer stance on the issue, turning their focus to peddling realistic policies rather than clinging to a hard-and-fast no-guns line.
On a recent Sunday in April, 70 doctors and scientists associated with the AAP filed into a convention center in Vancouver to discuss firearm injury prevention. Presenters clicked through PowerPoint slides highlighting topics such as risk factors for gun injuries, popular gun-safety myths, and stats on suicide and homicide due to guns in the home. The issue of guns really follows directly from all the concerns we have about injuries in general. This is one kind of injury that endangers the health and life of kids, said Dr. Robert Sege, a Boston Medical Center pediatrician, who gave a presentation on how to talk about guns with parents.

Is there any aspect of our lives and American culture remaining that hasn’t been politicized and made worse by liberals?
The good doctors need to reflect on how
the psychotic drugs caused the massacre.
Like all articles generating the drum roll for gun control this article is deliberately misleading starting with the above. Just because the group has 62,000 members doesn't mean that all 62,000 of them are for gun control or even a significant number of them. It just means that the pushy busybodies that like to get elected to offices in this sort of thing are for it. Yet the way it's written it would lead you to believe that the members are unanimously for gun control. While doubtless some of the are I'm sure not all are.
Our pediatrician had more lakes items than I do.
If the Pediatric ass-clowns would stop lining their pockets by prescribing mind-altering drugs to young people - the school shootings would drop to near zero.
The title of this thread should read,
“Left-Wing Gun-Grabbing Quacks Fight the NRA Over
Gun-Grabbing.”
White liberal elites (who happen to be doctors) walk outside their field and pontificate about something they know almost nothing about.
Yeah, I’m impressed.../s
Back in the early 90’s, when the kids were little and this issue was fresh with the APA, there was a standard flyer type of handout that the APA sent to its members. Our doc was enthusiastic about it, and i remember her bringing it up one time asking all sorts of stupid questions, and parroting the then-current nonsense about how “guns in the home” were more likely to be used against family and loved ones than intruders. (Google Kellerman 1993 for the genesis of these lies.)
Rather than getting angry, I figured this was a “teachable moment” — she wanted to talk about guns, so I figured, “let’s talk about guns”. Offered to take her to the range (she declined), but a few days later, after a trip to the local public library (yes, this was before the internet), I was able to find a copy of both Kellerman’s “study”, and Dr. Scheafer’s rebuttal to it. You can’t read both and not realize that Kellerman was lying through his teeth — that whatever motivated the gun control histrionics of the time, it clearly wasn’t public safety.
To her credit, she told me that she had stopped that line of inquiry with all of her patients.
The point of this long-winded post, I guess, is that on occasion these interactions are an opportunity to counter the lies of the left. Rather than indulging in the righteous outrage that this stuff certainly engenders, sometimes you can help an honest, but befuddled person to see the light.
I bring this up only because I want to make the point that you don't have to be a gun owner to be a supporter of individual rights to own a gun. I have live long enough to know, and to have seen over and over and over again, that there are compassionless self centered people in the world who have the talent to gain power via political manipulation, and there are compassionless self-centered people in the world who have no hesitation to use weapons and firepower to gain power.
To me, there is no difference, and neither is more or less violent. Using propaganda and Alinsky-like psy-ops is no less aggressive than taking over a town by armed conflict. The goals are the same, the results are the same, and neither is acceptable.
Having said all of that, I have to say that in my view the only thing that stops those who would ‘rule’ and suppress liberty by using political manipulation, is their fear that those with weapons will say - ‘game over, we no longer accept you as legitimate and we don't care what political capital and power you've accumulated’.
I guess I'm saying that you have to have extensive checks and balances that protect all segments of society. If there were no fear of reprisal, the manipulators would have long ago ruined the world. On the other hand, if not for those who see beyond the gun barrel, we might not exist anymore on this planet.
Like the AMA and the AARP, the AAP is a Leftist front organization; not surprising, then, that they consistently oppose the US Constitution in favor of their Marxist stance.
I’d prefer to have a discussion with my child’s prospective physician the frequency of child patient molestation by pediatricians, domestic violence by doctors, and the larger topic of physicians who steal drugs from their pharmacies and illegally use or re-sell them, or who are drunk or stoned on duty. Any time a doc wants to talk about guns, just before firing him, we’ll have that discussion I prefer.
And Eddie Eagle has been around how long ?
2012 - 1988 = 24...
Yeah aap Y'All are on the forefront of Firearm Safety for Children.
STFU and go away you piker leftists!!!!!!!!!!!
Good for You.
I just ignore that page and hand back the forms.
I’ve been told I had not completed them before.
I replied- YES I HAVE.
Last I knew the ‘medical profession’ was accidently killing 1.5 - 1.75 MILLION people annually.....
I had a doctor ask one of my kids about guns. Luckily I read this site, so I knew it was comings. My kids are trained to LIE THROUGH THEIR TEETH when answering questions that are inappropriate.
Sadly, one of the MOST IMPORTANT things for a parent to do is teach their kids how and when to lie - or the parent may REALLY regret not doing it.
I’m surprised too. My congratulations on your persuasiveness
