On Thursday, fast-food workers in more than 30 countries across six continents will take coordinated action on an unprecedented scale. In the United States, they will walk off their jobs in 150 cities the largest strike ever. Workers around the world will join these protests in 80 cities.
The protestors are set to take over a McDonalds during lunchtime rush hour in Belgium; hold flash-mobs at McDonalds restaurants across the Philippines, and conduct a teach-in at McDonalds headquarters in New Zealand.
The spread of the fast-food movement to the global stage is notable for the speed at which it has happened. What began as a single strike in New York City in November 2012, with roughly 200 workers participating, has in 18 months spread across the country and now across national borders. The efforts of fast-food workers have captured the nations attention, been featured in President Barack Obamas speeches on inequality and inspired local elected officials to raise minimum wages.

If these people walk off their jobs in the US, and are fired, can they collect unemployment?
The useful idiots don’t see that the first ones hurt are the ones asking for more pay....they will just end up paying MORE for their daily needs, milk, bread, tennis shoes....one solution is...lower the cost of goods and lower federal taxes which will make the $$ stronger....every one has more to spend and to save.
Earth to author: look for the union ahole.
Government wage fixing kills jobs and causes inflation. It hurts the low-wage earner first and worst.
Good way to get rid of McDonald’s, Burger King, Wendy’s, Hardies etc. Next they will come for the Outback, Red Lobster and T.G.I. Fridays. Soon the young won’t have a ladder to climb on.
This isn't like getting a trophy for showing up!
Once they get signed up for all the government handouts they will probably end up with more take-home than when they worked.
The fight for a global warming minimum wage. As the oceans rise, so shall my wages!
No, because they would be fired for cause (not working).
One word solution:
Robots.
This will get the me,me,me entitlement generation the salvation they’ve been looking for.
They have lived their whole lives being useless and doing nothing... thinking that they should be rewarded anyway. If the minimum wage increase happens, it will only prove that they were right: you don’t have to do anything to get rewarded in life.
OK, a global minimum wage would likely be about $4 a DAY
Yep.
An ounce of gold today will buy the same thing and ounce of gold bought in 1888.
A single small gold nugget would buy a month’s grocery supplies in 1888.
Today, that same single gold nugget will still buy the same amount of grocery supplies.
A minimum wage job 10 years ago will buy the same amount of groceries as a minimum wage job does today.
If you increase the pay, then the groceries will go up too, and a minimum wage job will STILL buy the same amount of groceries.
Exactly.
These liberals who expect $15.00 an hour to work in a fast-food joint are going to usher in the era of mechanized, assembly-line style fast-food restaurants with just a few human workers.
That's the way Japan is headed. Their Asimo robot is a cheerful servant. They have french fry vending machines. Vending machines everywhere. These young people complain too much, complaining their way out of a job.
If I owned a McD’s and one of my employees did this, I would cut his hours to 8 a week, and then eventually four hours a week (or whatever I could legally get away with), until he quit. I see no reason to give someone unemployment when it can be avoided. I also see no reason to keep people who think they are entitled to receive more than they are worth. If you’re not willing to flip burgers for $8 an hour, perhaps you should improve your skills so you can do another job that pays more instead of whining about how you don’t like getting paid so little for doing something anyone can do. [I know it’s hard, hot work, but there are teenagers who want that job at market rates and won’t complain as much.]
Yep.
Then, the “kill the robots” campaign will begin against evil, capitalist robot manufacturers.
Let’s see...$15/hr? If a fast food person want that, I will charge $30/hr for my educated services. Right now I’m charging $17/hr for computer work. A teenager can take your order and screw it up at $9/hr. Will they replace teenagers with MBAs who won’t screw up a simple order?
It varies from state-to-state. In most locales the UE office will approve them and it's up to the employer to contest it.
