33 shot in one month: "I think there's a .gun crime issue"

I think there’s a gun crime issue in Jacksonville that we have to get ahead of.”

The clear message from Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Director Mike Williams today...

While JSO could not definitively say why we’re seeing a spike, they believe there is a common thread of drug activity- from marijuana to cocaine- that leads to gun crime.

“If you’re not buying drugs, selling drugs, or hanging out with somebody that’s doing one of those two things, your chance of being a victim of gun crime in Jacksonville is very low,” says Director Tom Hackney.

He says many of the recent shootings do have a gang element as well.

With this apparent spike and the changes it’s prompting in enforcement, I asked whether you need to be concerned for your safety.

“Every citizen of Jacksonville needs to take their own personal safety in to account in every neighborhood,” Hackney says.

He encourages you to be vigilant, but know that police are working to make your streets safer.

This article is an excellent example of how gun control rhetoric pervades our news media. The article starts out with a strong statement implying that the recent uptick in violent crime in Jacksonville, FL is caused by guns. This is the statement which most people will remember about this article.

Then, we read further down in the article that the people shooting each other are drug addicts, drug dealers & gang members. Lo and behold! The problem is criminals. Buying and selling illegal drugs is a notoriously violent, dangerous trade. And being in a street gang is could hardly be described as a safe environment that fosters love for your fellow man.

Predictably, people being responsible for their own safety is only mentioned at the end of the article (which many people never get to) after a direct question about personal safety was asked. That statement is naturally followed by a "police are out there protecting you" statement. Only the trained eye would note that the article asks people to call with information after the crime has already been committed; thus, only offering protection after the fact.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

So all the low-life criminals are shooting one another.

Jacksonville certainly does have a gun problem.

They need more guns.

A Michigan state senator representing Detroit is saying that Detroit has a justifiable homicide “problem”. So in other words its not the attacking thugs who are the problem but the would be victims who use deadly force.

He’s also angry that the new police chief is telling people to arm themselves because the police simply can’t get there in time if someone is kicking a door in.

Yep, this article could have been written 20 years ago, except the number of shootings would have been higher.

Was thinking the same thing that you have to read this whole article to understand the situation. Open carry is the only solution - American cities have turned into the Serengeti and people need to act accordingly. Throw out the politicians who stop you from self-protection. Run for office yourself if you have to, but only if you want to win and stop the Lefties from running us all into the ground.

Perfect example of what happens to people’s brains when they do drugs or huff various chemicals.

Hmmm. Sounds more like an illegal drug problem, or even criminals breaking the law as criminals are want to do problem rather than a “gun” problem to me.

When thousands are slaughtered on the highways, is that a “car” problem or a “driver” problem?

It is amazing how much the truth hurts some people to the point where they would rather blame the victim.

Open carry is the only solution

Indeed, it's long past time for Floridians to reverse Janet Reno's ban on open carry.

I lived there in the very late 80s through the nineties. When I moved there it was a city of about 500k. Around 1990 we had the thugs throwing junk off interstate overpasses. First inkling things weren't right in Jacksonville.

Then I began to notice gang graffiti in the middle class neighborhoods in the Mandarin and Baymeadows area.

I knew if I stayed there and had a family we would be moving to St. John's county for better schools.

Too bad to hear this about Jacksonville. It is a city with a lot of potential. Access to the beach. Moderate climate for north Florida.

Unfortunately it's on I-95....the drug highway of the east coast.

I used to live a half hour outside Jax, at the beach. It was decided that this was too close. I now live an hour and a half outside Jax.

Last summer I read about a riot in Jax Beach. I wondered, was the sun too hot? Was the water too cold? What would cause a riot in a small beach town.

I know that (most of) the people here can guess the answer.

We have it up here in Michigan, and I see no problem with it at all... except for a few LEO’s who harass citizens for exercising their right to open carry, but no surprise there.
