American teens don’t want to work

Here’s yet another thing your teenager doesn’t want to do this summer: get a job.

The number of teens with summer jobs has fallen roughly 30 percentage points since the late ‘70s. In 1978, nearly three in four teenagers (71.8%) ages 16 to 19 held a summer job, but as of last year, only about four in 10 teens did, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics for the month of July analyzed by outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas . It’s been a steady decline, seen even during good times: During the dot-com boom in the late 1990s, when national unemployment was only about 4%, roughly six in 10 teens held summer jobs.

As of ten years ago, in the NorthEast, it was hard for teens to find jobs because of insurance concerns for minors. Everyone was afraid of liability. I had a kid get a summer job yanked once they realized he was 17 instead of 18. He would have been behind the meat counter—they were afraid the insurance wouldn’t let him use the slicer.

I agree with a lot of these answers, but couldn’t it also be that kids just don’t want to work? Maybe they just want to hang out with their buddies during the summer.

I’ve been trying to find a high school kid for a summer job to sit on the freaking beach all day and do two hours actual work at $100 day and can’t find one.

Many of the entry level jobs are being done by illegals. And raising the minimum wage will make lots of those jobs go away. Besides that, a lot of them have been taught that they are entitled, so why work? The taxpayers will support them if their parents kick them out........and that’s the way it should be! /s

The jobs that I did late in high school would today at the very least cause my employer to lose their insurance, and at worst, get the company closed down and it’s officers thrown in jail. I’m still here, and have all of my extremities and the use of them.

That’s a big part of it along with attitude. Work ethic when hiring folks is almost non-existent.

My son has been working since he was 15. It’s easy to get a job. A lot of teens don’t need to work. They get money from other sources.

I guess you are unaware of the I9 process.

I agree. My eldest son has been working since he was 15 also (really before then but odd jobs). Working part time now in food service while going to college and he is amazed at how many people, not just teens, that cycle in and out in just a few days because they are lazy and unwilling to do any real work. They expect a lot of money for doing nothing.

Starting the summer after 7th grade I worked
Babysat, cleaned houses and picked fruit
I am not sure if teens would do that today.

They are spoiled by Mom and Dad...or the profits of the drug culture...

Besides, employers have much more leverage when insisting teens put down their smartphones...

American teens don’t want to work

Well, soon enough there won't be any jobs for them. How convenient...

Going Galt is denying the looters the fruits of your labor.

These teens are just following their natural human tendency toward sloth.

I work with a woman who said her 17 year old son complains about making minimum wage. What makes these kids believe they are worth so much money when they get their very first job?

Actually, they are like the long-term unemployed. They are feral. They don’t have a grasp of getting up, going to work and staying at work for a shift.
We hire people who have been out of work for a year and they wander in late or leave when they want. They use up all their time off in the first few months. When they try to schedule a vacation, they don’t understand that they used all their time off. They are so used to getting paid to do nothing.
It’s no wonder that they quit to “go back to school” so much.
