The NBC/WSJ poll is the first in a little while that's found any glimmer of optimism for the Obama administration.
Unlike this week's Washington Post poll, it finds a marginal improvement in the president's approval rating (to 44 percent) and slightly less anger at the ACA (down to 46 percent disapproval). But like every poll, it finds the largely white, somewhat older Republican vote far more likely to turn out this year. Among all voters, there's a 45/45 split on which party is preferred to win the election. Among likely voters, there's a 5338 advantage for the Republicans.
It gets worse! On Twitter I asked whether all of these national polls were being a bit too closely watched, because the key Senate races were happening on turf where Obama is phenomenally unpopular. NBC's Mark Murray answered:
[Mark Murray - Obama approval in South Per NBC/WSJ poll: 39%-58%. Midwest: 43%-51%. Northeast: 45%-47%. West: 51%-42%.]
Look again at where Democrats are fighting to retain control of the Senate. The seats in West Virginia, North Carolina, Arkansas, and Louisiana are in the "South." The seats in South Dakota and Montana are in the Midwest; so are the GOP's reaches into Iowa and Michigan. The positive Obama polling in "the West" obscures how he's struggling in Colorado, but explains why the idea of Oregon as a GOP upset opportunity remains pure theory.
My point is that Obama could fight back to, say, 48 percent approval nationwide, but

Haha, Slate is whistling past a graveyard. What Obama poll recovery?
Obama’s approval ratings are improving? ROTFL! Somebody been hittin’ da happy smoke again.
It's Weigel. He gotta throw his lefty readers a bone. ;-)
Never fear, no matter how bad it goes for the dems there will always be plenty of GOPocrats to save their bacon and agenda.
Recovers? It was reported just yesterday that Hussein’s numbers were at an all time low.
What’s this doom stuff? They have no need to worry. THEIR OPPONENTS ARE THE GOP-E!
The uptick is probably related to his foreign tour.
As a bounce its short-lived and ultimately of no help to endangered Democrats.
Most of the uptick is from Blue State California where he has strong approval ratings anyway.
“David Weigel” AND “Slate” are FULL OF SHI!T! The Dems AND GOP-e are going DOWN in November!
LOL the Acid is flowing.
“Unlike this week’s Washington Post poll, it finds a marginal improvement in the president’s approval rating (to 44 percent) and slightly less anger at the ACA (down to 46 percent disapproval).”
I can’t believe that the ACA (Obamacare) has a 46 percent approval rating. Just goes to show you why the Media focus all the anger on the “disastrous roll-out” rather than the flawed law itself. It’s a political slight of hand that the Media hopes will preserve the Law and the Democrat chances in the next presidential cycle.
That depends on the stupid party passing amnesty.
If they do, the bottom will fall out of Grassroots enthusiasm.
Bingo.
NBC/WSJ polls are historically skewed left so it looking very bad...for Dems.
The last poll over sampled Democrats by a large margin
The Democrats had their chance to ram things thru,
For two long years, there was nothing we could do.
Now here we are, 5 years later, racing to the bottom,
As the United States of America craters.
These counter culture Democrats we will not forget,
Nor will our Grandchildren’s descendants,
Who must pay the 7 Trillion Dollar Obamadebt.
IMPEACH OBAMA! say I, say you,
But with Doormat Boehner as Speaker,
What can we do?
To the media slight of hand you might also add the low information voters lack of attention span. The ACA in the news cycle has been replaced by MH370,Ukraine,and the LA Clippers' owner.
With the GOPe in charge, even when we win . . we lose
To rehabilitate themselves and their party they need to purge themselves of Socialism. They need to base success and politics on only one thing: excellence. Not race, not party, not gender, not sexuality and not hard-luck stories of the beggars and entitleds.
“Among likely voters, there’s a 5338 advantage for the Republicans. It gets worse!”
If the Republicans don’t blow this by trying to pass amnesty, the Salon writers and PMSNBC talking heads are going to be on suicide watch.
