MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) - As Minneapolis police announce arrests in a violent attack that was filmed and posted on social media, officers are also warning people that carrying expensive smart phones in public could put them at risk.
Last week, Fox 9 News spoke with several witnesses who came upon an assault in progress near Roosevelt High School that left a teenaged girl bleeding from the nose and mouth.
FOX 9 ARCHIVE: Brutal beating of teen caught on camera
Although police were investigating the case as an aggravated robbery, few details were released before the arrest announcement on Tuesday. Now, police confirm that stealing a smartphone was a partial motive for the three juvenile suspects.
Most people don't carry large amounts of cash anymore -- and some don't carry any at all, but most people do have a smartphone. For thieves, that's just as good.
"There's a huge black market for electronic devices and that's a problem right now," Cmdr. Bruce Folkens told Fox 9 News.
Yet, the greatest irony in the Minneapolis attack is that while police believe the girls who committed the assault wanted to steal a smart phone, witnesses at the scene used their own devices to capture pictures and video of the event -- evidence that became crucial in making the arrests.

Yep, Female Thugs!
Whole populations of our country are headed straight for Hades if they don’t figure it out soon.
RACIST HATE CRIME!!!!!!!!! Note to self: Stay armed.
Was this black on black violence? Is the president outraged yet...
...as night
People are being beat up and mugged for their cell phones all the time now. Displaying them in public is pretty stupid and just asking to have it stolen or worse....
What goes on in peoples heads? They stand by and record the beat downs on their phones. But no one lifts a finger to help. We were raised to step in and help and I was raised in Newark, N.J. But we had good parents and nuns that taught us what to do. Unfortunately those times are long gone.
Unfortunately, in today’s legal system your hands are tied when you see something like this happening. If you intervene, charges can be brought on you and the perp can even sue you can win.
If we strung up all the judges who allow this crap a lot less criminals would think they can get away with it.
No criminal does. The reason that the police go after the other crooks is because they don’t want the completion.
You meant to say “they don’t want the competition”.
Minor typo, I got your point.
I don’t completely agree with you. I think there are plenty of good cops out there, but the mind-set is one of control and it doesn’t like the idea of people defending themselves, and then there are all kinds of bureaucratic sicknesses that set in and infect even the best of people.
So I wouldn’t make a blanket statement like “cops are criminals” but the bottom line is: most police do not want citizens defending themselves, either with guns or cameras. They just want you to “call it in” and rely on their ability to do whatever it is they feel like doing at that point in their career/election-cycle. It might be the right thing; it might not. The point is, you can never know for sure.
” black market for electronic devices”? Sounds racist to me!(Sarcasm).
Gee, even back in the good old days, smart parents had a strict rule for their kids, “Never take anything to school that you would be upset about if it was lost, stolen, or damaged.”
It also avoids lots of other problems, and sets the kids up for some good lessons.
“When you see some kid flashing their expensive stuff around, don’t be envious, because it might be all the stuff they have.
“It might also be a prop, since they don’t have much to talk about and feel that otherwise they are dull.
“Or it could be an attention getting device.”
The myth that the police are only moments away is being promoted still by the fool man being interviewed saying, ‘I wish someone had used their phone to call 911 so the police could have intervened’. Disgusting programming our populace is under.
Oh, please, maybe in your universe.
You are right about the lawsuits but I would like to think that I would try to do something besides video or hide. I may be old but I still have some fight left in me. And besides I don’t have much for them to get in a lawsuit.
I’d be right there with yah! :)
