Let me get this straight - these Russian thugs set up illegal "checkpoints" in a country they don't own, and when the Ukrainian security moves in to do something about it, the thugs claim to be the victims?

The native people of Slavyansk are Russian speakers. The Ukraine is their homeland. About half are Russian-speaking Ukrainians, who retained their forefathers’ language and religion from before there was ever a land called Ukraine. The other half are Russians, or descended from Russians, who moved into the area while the whole of the region was part of the Russian Empire.

Their democratically elected government was over-run by European-Union funded mercernaries. The supposed crime which justified this coup was the very sort of actions that the Kiev junta is now using against them.
