The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits increased more than expected last week, but the rise probably does not suggest a shift in labor market conditions as the underlying trend continued to point to strength.
Initial claims for state unemployment benefits rose 24,000 to a seasonally adjusted 329,000 for the week ended April 19, the Labor Department said on Thursday.
Claims for the week ended April 12 were revised to show 1,000 more applications received than previously reported.
Economists polled by Reuters had forecast first-time applications for jobless benefits rising to 310,000.
The increase probably reflects difficulties adjusting the data for seasonal fluctuations given a late Easter this year and the timing of school spring breaks.
The four-week moving average for new claims, considered a better measure of underlying labor market conditions as it irons out week-to-week volatility, rose only 4,750 to 316,750. That was not too far from pre-recession levels.

There are always “Issues” which are eyed.
What is needed is jobs. In America.
Jobs.
Strength? What strength?
It’s gotten so bad now that the media refuses even to put their own names behind the drivel.
Now it’s a late Easter causing this. The people see everything but the obvious.

Has the labor participation rate been trending up?
Look at the chart I posted in 10. Wee are near the lows of the past 30+ years
LOL! Seriously? A late Easter? They are scraping the bottom of the Excuse-barrel!
The downward slope seems to have sharpened drastically since 2009. Not a good sign.
It’s the same as blaming it on the weather. I don’t know of any state that allows you to file for unemployment because you miss a few days due to “weather”. Most have a 2 week waiting period.
Well, I think the survey portion of the UE statistics does attempt to “get at” hours worked, but seriously... some people get Good Friday, but a lot don’t. Sheesh!
Unemployment Claims go Down = All Powerful Obama's policies are working!!
Unemployment Claims go Up = Weather/Seasonality/Mean Republicans are causing the increase!!
(/sarcasm off)
That’s the economic piece. The demographics have been in place for decades. Demographics is destiny.
Here it is for women:
