Treasury Secretary Jack Lew will visit bankrupt Detroit this week to highlight the Obama administration's "continued commitment to the city's revitalization and explore ways to promote job creation and economic growth," according to an advisory his department released on Monday. --snip--
"I have urged President Obama to examine all options for executive action to help the city of Detroit overcome its fiscal challenges, and I am pleased that he is seeking to take positive action," said Representative John Conyers, a Democrat from Michigan. "I will be discussing further legislative options with my colleagues in Congress."

Tear down all the derelict structures that are still standing in Detroit, tear up the streets in the vast expanses between the few remaining habitable structures, and plant it all in corn to produce ethanol. The isolated housing units become rural homesteads.
When there is an economic reason to develop the land further, as when a new demand for having a city there is finally determined, then pour money into filling that demand. But as it is, much of Detroit is nothing but a dumping ground for debris of all sorts, with no scheduled pickup dates.

Not a bad idea but unfortunately Obama is demanding that money to tear down houses be used to bail out pensions. Basically keep them in squalor and on the plantation. Fortunately not all republicans are bravely retreating from the challenge of Detroit and the GOP is actually making inroads.
Now that its been approved for Canada to build a new bridge Obama refuses to release funding for the approaches on our side of the river. Detroit is the second busiest freight crossing on the continent and the Ambassador bridge is ready to fall in the river.

Empty, hollow words from an empty, hollow politician. Show up, make pretty speeches and promises, walk away. Things remain the same or get worse. Wash, rinse, repeat.

Detroit is what American cities will look like IF Democrats get their way. Every liberal idea was tried there. Every liberal idea failed there...

Exactly. Unfortunately it appears to be exactly what most "conservatives" want.
Part of my solution is for Obama to get the hell out of the way and let Canada build their bridge. Set up an economic development zone with minimal taxation and eliminate the ridiculous regulatory regime set up by chairman Young.
In some respects, Detroit already has more going for it than most large American cities. Its legal for private contractors to compete against municipal services. (The Detroit bus company is private and growing in competition with the city) Open carry and stand your ground are in force in Detroit with the backing of the police chief.
