Parents, kids don’t want first lady at HS graduation

TOPEKA, Kan. — If expanding the guest list to include Michelle Obama at graduation for high school students in the Kansas capital city means fewer seats for friends and family, some students and their parents would prefer the first lady not attend.

A furor over what the Topeka school district considers an honor has erupted after plans were announced for Obama to address a combined graduation ceremony for five area high schools next month an 8,000-seat arena. For some, it was the prospect of a tight limit on the number of seats allotted to each graduate.

For others, it was the notion that Obama’s speech, tied to the 60th anniversary of the US Supreme Court’s decision in Brown v. Board of Education outlawing segregation in schools, would overshadow the student’s big day

Michelle Obama wants to lecture us all about civil rights and race issues.

She will praise the Brown decision as a giant step forward for civil rights and equal rights for all people.

But then, she will say that, while we have made great progress on civil rights and equality for all, that there is still a long way to go.

Her speech is so predictable, that we don’t have to listen to it.

Then, the talking heads will pick up on her points, and echo the point that while great progress has been made, that there is still a long way to go. They will tell us that many big city school systems are as segregated as ever, 60 years after Brown, and navel gaze about oh what can we do about this sad state of affairs, yadda, yyadda yyadda

...Some people have said bringing in the first lady politicizes the graduation.... if she wants to mark the Brown anniversary, she could just visit the historic site that commemorates the decision, which is just few blocks from the graduation venue.

Any event will carefully vetted by the SS. Any potential nonbelievers will not be admitted to the graduation ceremony. Additionally, count on traffic to be diverted for miles and hours within range of the venue.

combining 5 area hs graduations into one ceremony..seems like a depersonalized political event with props instead of a smaller day of celebration for the families.

What sane school would want everyone to wear gas masks at graduation ceremony?

That would be my main objection - the hassle of security.

Mail me my diploma, I’m going water skiing, rather than let that person, who so recently became proud of her country, speak to me and ruin graduation.

After graduation, the kids can eat real food for lunch.

I wouldn’t want America’s cancer at my graduation either.

Will she explain why her party fought against civil rights so viciously?

My grandson works in Topeka and said there are a whole lot of Black people that live there which is one the reasons he lives elsewhere. I do remember when my son was in high school in Overland Park, any football games scheduled against Topeka were always played at their field rather than Topeka because none of our parents would go to Topeka.

Seems like it would be a lot easier for her to speak at the high school graduation for some school in D.C. if she really thinks it is necessary.
