Military dive teams worked the dark, cold waters of the Yellow Sea on Wednesday night in a desperate effort to find nearly 300 people who remained missing after the ferry they were taking to a South Korean island resort sank with breathtaking speed.

The bulk of those aboard were students and teachers from Seoul's Ansan Danwon High School heading to a four-day trip to Jeju, a resort island considered the Hawaii of Korea. More than 300 students and more than a dozen teachers from the school were on board, according to officials.

Sadly when there is an emergency on a passenger ship, crowd control becomes the priority of the crew. The passengers were instructed to stay where they were, mostly below decks, and drowned when the ship floundered.
Apparently the good news about the students was false. Why would the school release such a claim? This must be agony for the parents just as it is for the relatives of any missing passenger.
FR was among the first to report this last night. Still not on Drudge....

A Door ?
not a torpedo or sub collision, we would hope
How awful. RIP.
Jeju is their top tourist island
how many rescued?
that would be an international crisis
They are now saying 469 aboard, confirmed 174 have been rescued . Very bad.
only if it is ever publicized
Anyway, on this nautical chart I believe it was at top center, just to the north of the long island, near the "38 Rk" marking ( supposed to indicate a deep rock. ) Note the channel marking at the upper right. There are a couple of aerial news shots which I believe are looking south across the island group.
