KIEV, April 15. /ITAR-TASS/. Shots are being fired at the airdrome near the city of Kramatorsk, Donetsk Oblast, and one fighter plane has been shot down, witnesses report from the scene. As follows from what the people say four fighter planes, presumably Sukhoi-27 were hovering over Kramatorsk. At a certain point they opened fire at the local airdrome. Wait for a real media outlet to see if there is any truth to it. I wouldn’t be surprised, though, if it was a mechanical problem or if Spetsnaz fired a manpad at a Ukrainian plane.

Given the state of the Ukrainian Air Force, it is entirely possible that it fell out of the sky on its own.
There has been no photo evidence of the pro-Russian protestors having any AA capability, at all.

SU-27 is not VTOL and wouldn't use it that way if it were.

Probably meant loitering.
There is video of these jets flying at just a couple of hundred feet over the fields. Definitely low enough for ground fire to create some havoc.

I'm staying at my son in law and daughter's house until our new one is ready
Because we're gone a lot ( dieing today from some kind of flu ... killer flu !) .. all we have is a TV that has two PBS channels.
BBC and Asian TV is covering this extensively and I wouldn't know how extreme it is if I relied on American TV or radio.
Even FR can't quite transmit the impact these other outlets are having with their live news reports
This is serious
And btw`.... does anyone ELSE get a hint of Bush/Blair with Putin/obama ?

Given the state of the Ukrainian Air Force quality of Russian jet engines, it is entirely possible that it fell out of the sky on its own.

“I imagine Russian Spetznaz would have SA-18’s.”
If they had SA-18’s, there would be four jets down, not one. In the vids, they are flying too low and slow not to get hit by them.
I’d lean to mechanical failure, or local ground fire. They were flying REALLY low. That is a lesson they will have to learn about the hard way, I guess.

Earlier reports refered to and had a pix of 1 jet not 4 active over the area. Sounds like it might be a chopper.

Of the Ukrainian aircraft in Crimea that the Russians released last week, only ONE SU-27 could fly home, after maintenance. The rest were going to have to be trucked out.
Doesn’t say a lot for the Ukrainian readiness, does it?

If ground fire brought an aircraft down, they'll probably send ground troops to take the airport rather than risk bombing it into rubble.
