NYPD cop barred from leaving India after accidentally bringing three bullets into country: officials

An NYPD cop is stuck in India after being arrested for accidentally bringing three bullets into the country, officials said Friday.

Officer Manny Encarnacion was taken into custody on March 10 after security at New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport found the bullets in his checked baggage, police sources said.

“I’m troubled by it,” Mayor de Blasio said Friday of the arrest. “We want to make sure we're providing support for him — and make sure he’s not being treated unfairly.”

In December, the controversial arrest and strip search of New Delhi’s then-deputy consul-general Devyani Khobragade in Manhattan for allegedly paying her nanny as little as $3 an hour caused an international firestorm.

The incident fueled tensions during Encarnacion’s arrest.

“The police official who questioned [Encarnacion] said, ‘Oh New York City police. You’re the guys who like to strip-search our diplomats,’” said a source familiar with the incident.

Rep. Peter King accused India of seeking payback by arresting the cop.

Plus they body cavity searched the Indian female diplomat. I really don’t care what India chooses to do with this representative of that city.

Let this be a ‘learning experience’ for this officer. Let him tell all his cop friends about how it feels to be on the wrong end of a stupid gun law.

Real live rounds? That's nothing. It's my understanding that empty shell casings are considered ammunition in Washington, D.C. Possession of such has serious implications.

How lenient are the police when someone accidently brings a concealed weapon into NYC?

Bingo.

By the way, I recently traveled by air utilizing my range bag as my carry-on bag. (You can be sure I inspected it for contraband beforehand.) As I was waiting for my flight, TSA came through with a bomb-sniffing dog, which showed absolutely no interest in my bag, which must have been covered in GSR.

I’m sorry, but I have to disagree with most on here. While I agree that NYC has some stupid gun control laws that are too strenuously enforced, two wrongs don’t make a right. We should be opposed to gun control anywhere.

Further, while there most certainly are power-hungry idiotic police on most police forces, we know nothing about this particular police officer. Perhaps he disagrees with the NYC gun bans. Why should he be punished for enforcing a policy when he has no authority to refuse to enforce it? His job is to enforce the laws as written, not to make judgments as to whether or not those laws are good policy (Obama, PLEASE read that last sentence!!! It applies equally to you as well.)

BWAHAHAHAHA!!!

I’d say, “serves him right,” but there are still many old-school heroes in the NYPD, and who knows if this is one of those, or one of Bloomberg’s jack-booted thug bureaucrats.

” His job is to enforce the laws as written, not to make judgments as to whether or not those laws are good policy”

He took an oath to uphold and defend the Constitution. He has an obligation not to enforce unconstitutional laws.

If he cannot make a determination on what is constitutional and what is not, his oath means nothing. Somethings are obvious to anyone of ordinary intelligence.

Wrong. He can simply quit if he doesn't belive in what he's doing. "I was just following orders." didn't work for a defense in wartime when the one not following orders could be shot. It certainly doesn't work for police officers who at most would suffer a job reprimand for not enforcing the obviously unconstitutional laws.

we know nothing about this particular police officer. Perhaps he disagrees with the NYC gun bans.

We know that he is part of the organization that enforces NYC's laws. We know that he wasn't drafted, but sought the position, an in fact had to be competitive to get in. If he didn't agree with what he's doing why is he doing that job? SO ... Screw him. At least the Indians didn't haul his butt off to jail.

He should be glad he didn’t have any fingerguns or assault pop-tarts.

We should be opposed to gun control anywhere.....No,no. Every man has a right to life, liberty and the pursuit of property. WE, by virtue of our almost non-existant Constitution have a right to be armed as citizens of good standing. The other countries may have any laws they damn well choose. No ammo? OK if that is what they say. No guns? OK if that is what they say. NO COUNTRY has the right to say you may be armed, packing and in possession if they didn’t specifically say so by law or Constitution.
