WASHINGTON, April 11 (Reuters) - Longtime Republican congressman Thomas Petri of Wisconsin will not seek re-election in November, announcing his decision just a week after a conservative state legislator revealed plans to mount a primary challenge for his seat.
Petri, 73, viewed as a moderate member of the party, will formally announce his retirement plans at a town hall meeting on Monday in Neenah, Wisconsin, his office said in a statement on Friday. It gave no details about the reason for the decision.
Glenn Grothman, a Wisconsin state senator who is considered one of the state's most conservative Republicans, said last week he would file papers to run in the eastern Wisconsin 6th congressional district.
In a statement, Grothman, said Petri had done too little to stop the growth of government and to shrink the $17.5 trillion federal debt. He added that he was troubled by the millions more people who have become dependent on food and disability aid in recent years.
"The current congressman from the 6th District is a decent, genial person; nevertheless he does not have the sense of urgency which the above statistics should engender," said Grothman, 58. "I, like others, am troubled about our country's future."

Hopefully he doesn’t vote for Amnesty, as a GIFT to the people that want to kill this country.
I never believe them when they say “moderate”.
I think challenger Grothman is one of the immigration hawks in Wisconsin who was told to pipe down by La Raza Walker.
Lots of democrat and RINO retirements in the midwest these days.
I was searching for Paul Ryan’s immigration views from 2007-2008. Scott Walker says immigration distracts the GOP from Hispanic family values vote.

Grothmans bill would prevent sanctuary cities
Senator aims to eliminate safe harbors for illegal aliens

State Sen. Glenn Grothman (R-West Bend) and Rep. Roger Roth (R-Appleton) introduced legislation Tuesday to prevent local governments from declaring themselves sanctuary cities for illegal aliens.
Sanctuary cities protect illegal aliens through local resolutions, executive orders or city ordinances. City police departments may also issue their own special orders, policies and general orders to a similar effect.
FR needs its own “FR Like” buttons!!!!
Good. One less Bonerite.
he doesn’t want to end his career losing to a challenger republican.
wi is cleaning house well since 2010.
He's probably also having difficulty raising money.
“legislation Tuesday to prevent local governments from declaring themselves sanctuary cities for illegal aliens.”
It sad that you have to pass a law, to get someone to enforce a common-sense law.
he hasn’t had a republicn challenger ina loooooooooong time. he sees how wi is going and he’s not tea party/conservative.
Good Idea. When I get to 73 there is no way I'd be hanging out in DC.
He has no issue with money considering the NRCC dolls out where they think or need an incumbent to win. Add to that, the incumbent protection racket would have netted him millions over the time he has been there, especially since he went unchallenged in primaries.
The reality is that all of these guys have their own internal polling people on staff, paid for by you and me, and their internal polling must look horrible. So why make the effort and in the mean-time, find a way to ferret out that war chest to a private account under his control for the retirement years that the Congreess-critter retirement bennies wouldn’t cover.
With a Congress that is virtually assured to stay in the control of the GOP in numbers, sure are a lot of high ranking members who are willing to throw in the towel lately. Something big is stirring up and we all feel it too.
Petri to retire; Grothman to file Great news.
FReep Mail me if you want on, or off, this Wisconsin interest ping list.
La Raza Walker? Tell me, who passes your purity test?
St Peter was high on his list until he learned of the lies to the Romans
Scott Walker believes you should let in anyone who wants to work. Even Rand Paul says you can’t let the world in.
If you make it easier for low skilled immigrants to qualify, you get more of it.
He doesn’t want to enforce immigration laws even though a cop got killed and there were attempts by Grothman to address it.

That doesn’t answer who passes your purity test. Name him or her.
And that link you attached does not say what you say here. It says that he discourages the state legislators spending time on an Arizona-style immigration law. That article doesn’t say what you claim he believes. Maybe he does, but your “proof” isn’t.
