Trinity College, Dublin have been criticised after deciding to remove a depiction of the bible from their 422-year-old crest, with one graduate calling it "political correctness gone totally mad".

The college decided to remove the bible as part of a rebranding initiative and replace it with an "open book". A college memo says that the change will "create a more forward-looking image" and the new book will "signify the tradition of scholarship which should be accessible to all."

The college had previous told students and staff that it would keep the bible, along the other traditional symbols of the lion, castle and harp.

Graduate the Rev Dr William Morton, dean of the Church of Ireland cathedral in Londonderry told the Belfast Newsletter that the change was "political correctness gone totally mad". He added: "I am justifiably proud to have been a Trinity graduate, but this decision to remove the Bible from the insignia is extremely regrettable.

How is this different from the Taliban destroying Budda statues that were 1,700 years old? ...the crest was but 422 years old?

This new generation of progressives knows more than over 420 years of generations? Were these old generations just a bunch of white guys? Is that it?

How can they possibly keep the name “Trinity College”, with its obvious reference to deity? My guess is that if they changed the name, certain legal bits would kick in and leave them bereft of funding - and money drives everything at universities that can't be explained by politics.

May I suggest an alternative name: College des Manège à Trois.

This is very sad. They are entrusted with the safekeeping of the Book of Kells and now seem to be ashamed of it.

Looking at the old crest and the new one..... are we real sure that they just didn’t trade a closed Bible for an open Bible? I sure hope that is the case.

I was privileged to visit Trinity College a few years ago and so very much enjoyed the experience. Seeing the Book of Kells was one of the highlights of my trip to Ireland.
