The Kerry-Lavrov Chess Match
Asia Times ^ | Mar 31, '14 | Pepe Escobar

It's hardly a match between equals - as one is playing Monopoly while the other plays chess. It's as if Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has been postponing his checkmate, while US Secretary of State John Kerry increasingly realizes he's facing the inevitable.

Lavrov has explained over and over again, a loose federation is the only possible solution for Ukraine, as part of a "deep constitutional reform". That would imply ethnic - and even sentimentally - Russian eastern and southern Ukraine would be largely autonomous. Kerry gave signs of agreeing around two weeks ago that Ukrainian regions need more decision power; but then the White House recharged its moral blitzkrieg - coinciding with

President Barack Obama's trip to The Hague and Brussels. Still, even after an inconclusive four-hour Kerry-Lavrov chess match in Paris, there will be a checkmate.

The Russian solution is the same plan proposed by Moscow already a few weeks ago, and again discussed on the phone by Obama and President Vladimir Putin on Friday - which prompted Kerry to redirect his flight to Paris. Each Ukrainian region, according to Lavrov, would be able to control its economy, taxes, culture, language, education and "external economic and cultural connections with neighboring countries or regions". That's such a sound plan that even former - or perennial, depending on spin - cold warriors such as Henry Kissinger and Zbig Brzezinski reasonably agree.

Remember, Kerry was in Vietnam. He learned to play chess there! Or play the system. What a toad.

The lies coming from this mac daddy administration are way, way, way beyond anything that a person with an IQ of a rock would not believe.

Kerry dressed in his suit of pink lace against Lavrov in his fully armed tank, yea that will scare them.

You need to nurture your marriage, else you’re going to lose multi-hundreds of $$$$millions when Theresa tells you to F*** Off!!!

Since when is John F Kerry given sovereignty over Ukraine, to decide what form of government they will have, and which persons are allowed to bear arms there, within a country in a state of civil war?

Ukraine should ban John F. Kerry from its borders, and tell him to stay in Russia with his handlers.

No kidding. If the Ukrainians want to have enhanced “states rights”, then fine, but that is their decision. Fracturing too far into ever smaller divisions means they will never be able to stand up to Russia, and one must also keep in mind the distribution of Russian speaking Ukrainians (not all of whom are eager to join to Russia): The distribution looks like a bad case of gerrymandering in many cases.

There’s a new post at Elena Filatova’s website. It’s just her viewpoint / opinion, with a heavy dose of sarcasm, but it’s still interesting reading:

A Kerry-Lavrov chess match? Kerry can't even spell “chess”, let alone play it. Lavrov is eating Kerry's lunch. The brilliant, erudite, elegantly coiffed, bloviating John F’ing Kerry has absolutely NO clue what's happening. Kerry is dumber than a box of rocks, with apologies to the rocks. Incompetent doesn't begin to describe JFK's abilities as Secretary of State, but he's on equal ground with Barack Obama and Zer0’s handler, Valerie Jarrett..

First Kerry would have to understand what a bishop does and what the military or word diplomacy is all about.

But this illiterate would not be able to finish a chapter of Von Clausewitz without whining that it is “boring”
