Going back to about 1970 I remember the term ‘block’ buster being used in Detroit. It had to do with a black family moving into a city block which up to that point had been predominantly white, maybe an Asian family or Hispanic as well, but mostly white. Almost immediately homes went up for sale and the whites headed for the suburbs. Thus allowing more blacks to move in and you know the rest of the story.

The problem with Detroit can certainly be laid at the feet of racism.

The collapse started with the riots, and really started rolling with the election of Coleman Young, who celebrated at the acceleration of “white flight” because it ensured his continued reelection to Mayor, along with elections of more like-minded blacks as councilmen. The mopping up was done in the following decades as the city crushed the remaining employers with regulations.

There was racism the whole way...by the blacks.
