Someone had their finger on the trigger.

Sped away, causing the GUN of the officer to go off, all by itself, and whaddya know —they recover the van later, and discover that the round fired struck the SKY? No. The street? No:

It struck the FLEEING VAN.

A likely story.

Hey I believe in cops protecting themselves, but just you try shooting at a FLEEING perp in San Fransicko, and pull out a story like THIS one as a defense.

Think SFPD would let you off?

NOT IN A MILLION YEARS.

Guns don’t just “go off”. They don’t wake up one morning and decide that today is the day they’re going to assert themselves.

A modern firearm in good repair as a rule isn’t going to fire unless someone or something pulls the trigger. Watch out for brush or loose-clothing getting caught inside the trigger-guard and more importantly: keep your booger-hook off the bang-switch.

A more accurate headline would be: “San Francisco police officer accidentally fires his weapon.”

The basic rules of firearms safety are there for a reason.

With a nod to the late Col.(ret) Cooper:

1. All guns are always loaded. Period.
2. Never let the muzzle cover anything you don’t wish to destroy.
3. Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target.
4. Be sure of your target and what is beyond it.

I keep most of my firearms locked in a safe just so they don’t go on a shooting spree by themselves.

I'm inclined to think he wasn't aiming at the vehicle, because that's what he hit:)

/s (but just barely)

" but a car door remained open and the force of the vehicle accelerating caused it to fly open, hitting the officer and causing the officer's weapon to discharge, the spokesman said. "

Is the cop's last name "Pelosi"?

First off, open car doors fly SHUT when you speed off. I haven’t seen suicide doors on a car in a very long time (unless you buy one of those overpriced luxury euro jobs). Second: someone had their finger inside that trigger guard or it wouldn’t have “accidentally” gone off maliciously when it was .. EHEM... struck by the car door. Lastly, holstered pistols point down, not towards cars that are speeding away.

That’s an absurd title illustrating the ignorance of the typical “journalist” these days.

Doesn't help. I have the same arrangement and they fire, all by themselves, in the safe. You can hear the rounds ricocheting in there. It's kind of like listening to microwave popcorn sometimes.

I'm not saying you're wrong necessarily - the whole story is full of holes - but the mazda RX8 notably comes with suicide back passenger doors.

Nice car, too.

You’ve taught them bad habits. Years of hearing “I’d hit it” have conditioned them for premature operation.

You have to admit, it’s a much better story to blame the inanimate gun and the evil fleeing vehicle than it is to admit that the officer was about to pop a cap in that ignorant perp.
