Worlds Iconic Landmarks To Go Dark For Earth Hour
March 29, 2014 4:59 PM
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) If you happen to notice some of New York Citys famous landmarks go dark Saturday night, dont be alarmed.
Its all a part of a global initiative to bring awareness to our impact on the Earth.
This evening, people around the world will observe Earth Hour by turning off their lights between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m. local time.
Keya Chatterjee, of the World Wildlife Fund told 1010 WINS there has been major progress in conservation.
In the last 18 months there have been more solar panels installed in the United States than in the previous 30 years. So were seeing a real trend, Chatterjee said.
Those participating are asked to take the time to contemplate the Earths environment.
Earth Hour is a moment to kind of celebrate that trend and think about how we can switch the way we use electricity, Chatterjee added.
Nearly all of the worlds major landmarks and iconic buildings will also take part. Chinas Birds Nest Stadium, the Great Wall of China, the pyramids in Egypt, the Eiffel Tower, and Big Ben will all go dark at the same time.

What’s NoK going to do to celebrate every one copying them?
Let’s all burn some tires tonight.
Unless that is the only light around you, in which case be very alarmed because you are about to be mugged.
This is such BS. If liberal cities like New York really cared about consumption harming the Earth, they'd shut down most of the lights on Broadway. But that will never happen. Conservation is for the yokels, little people and country hicks who should cut back on gas and driving even though they live miles from each other.
Numbering the increase in robberies in 3 ..... 2 ..... 1 .....
I’m all in favor of caring for the environment.
But this accomplishes absolutely nothing, other than making a bunch of crazy liberals who have been brainwashed by crony-capitalist politicians feel good.
I celibrate power hour, to be thankful I’m not living in the dark ages. Turn it all on!
“In the United States, the Las Vegas strip, the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, the Willis Tower in Chicago, the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., the Space Needle in Seattle, and the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building in New York City are among those who will turn out the lights.”
It all seems a bit alarmist to me and may instill fear and even panic in the minds of those who are not aware of the Earth Hour. Moreover, it serves as proof that American landmarks have been co-opted by militant environmentalist luddites.
I wonder if the lights on Al Gore’s estates will go out
Turn on all the lights tonight
That’s what I love about their ‘religion’; global warming, or cooling, or change is really really really really important - up to and just short of their own platitudinous sacrifices.
Democrats live in darkness.
I’ve often wondered what the real economic consequences of such a pointless and hair-brained exercise are.
For example, the world’s oldest light bulb has been lit for 112 years. Keeping lights and electronics running is less damaging than repeatedly powering those devices on and off.
So, what are the effects of pointlessly and ineffectually shutting things off? How many lights or electronics that would have kept chugging along instead experience some kind of failure? How many new light bulbs, hard drives, and appliances will need to be replaced because some loony moonbat decided to demonstrate “ecological solidarity”?
Does the energy and materials cost to replace new lights and electronics seriously cut into the energy metaphorically saved by shutting the lights off for an hour? How many hours to you need to shut off your house lights in order to “save” enough energy and raw materials to produce a CFL lightbulb that just bit the dust because you flipped it on and off for no real reason?
I was just about to go outside and hoist my 500 watt shop light up on the roof for tonight’s show.
Power hour! Love it!
I turn on the big floodlights out front at 8:30 tonight looks like.
Ever seen “The Omega Man”? Think of that.....
It is astonishing how truly stupid ideas spread all over the globe so quickly now. It is equally astonishing how the entire world is populated with blithering touchy-feely idiots that have gained such control over sensible people. Two of America’s finest exports — stupid ideas and ignorance.
...and they would stop making movies. The “carbon footprint” of Hollywood is ENORMOUS. They’d also shut down all rich liberal playgrounds such as Aspen, Vail, and St. Moritz as well as prohibit private ownership of jets. Better yet, ban all travel beyond 50 miles of all liberal enclaves such as Beverly Hills.
