The difference being that whatever "gaffe" the Repub makes will lead the network news for a week, continually be the subject of current events program, and will constantly be used as proof of some Republican sin (sexism, racism, make your own selection). Braley's comments will either not see the light of day, or be spiked within a few days.
OMG. That’s just too good to be true!
Fine. Let's just split the difference and have a lawyer death tax.
I read that remark and was appalled, but not too surprised that it came from a Dem.
I’m in Iowa. I’m originally an East Coast lawyer. If you live here for any length of time, you come to appreciate farmers and the work they do. Every term, I have students right off of the farm or whose grandparents still farm. Farming comes through in student papers.
To try and bad-mouth Iowans by saying they are farmers without law degrees is not going to make any friends here. Time to send in another candidate. This one’s done.
“The first thing we do, let’s kill all the lawyers.”
William Shakespeare - Henry VI, Part 2 Act 4, Scene 2
Shakespeare meant it as a compliment to attorneys and judges who instill justice in society.
japan had a law that limited the total number of Lawyers to 10,000. this was in the 70s, and their economy boomed. then they eliminated the law and it has been down hill ever since.
If you think there are too many lawyers (in Japan or in the US) then why are legal fees so high?
I know the context, but I think Shakespeare would likely have a different take on nobles in today's society.
Perfect opening for Grassely. When he is asked about this statement he should thank the gentleman. What finer compliment could a person make.
I’d rather have a Senate or House full of farmers than lawyers or “educated” self righteous elites.

The less lawyers we have making laws the better.
If God weighs in again, it could be of influence.
Redneck Iowa has a reason to hate lawyers and love farmers.
My intent was humor. Sheesh, you must be a lawyer to be so legalistic and thin-skinned.

I imagine those are two very good reasons why Iowans keep electing Grassley.

Ha-ha. I get it now. Funny joke.

A busload of lawyers on their way to a convention careens off a bridge and plunges into a waterway. All are drowned. What's the larger tragedy?
There were 3 open seats.
The filing deadline for all Iowa political offices is past. Unless he dies or withdraws he is their nominee. They are stuck with him.
"My name is Billy. What's yours?" asked the first boy.
"Tommy," replied the second.
"My Daddy's an accountant. What does your Daddy do for a living?" asked Billy.
Tommy replied, "My Daddy's a lawyer."
"Honest?" asked Billy.
"No, just the regular kind", replied Tommy.
The terrorist leader announced that, unless their demands were met, they would release one attorney every hour.

OK, last 2 jokes (and there's a million more)
Q: What do you call a lawyer gone bad?
A: Senator.
Q: What's wrong with lawyer jokes?
A: Lawyers don't think they're funny and other people don't think they're jokes.
