MSNBC is in serious trouble

By DYLAN BYERS | 3/26/14 12:01 PM EDT

This is the story of MSNBC in a nutshell: It rose to prominence on its criticism of George W. Bush, peaked during Barack Obama's historic 2008 campaign, and, by criticizing Republicans and championing liberal causes, sustained its viewership in the years that followed.

Until now.

MSNBC suffered harder loses in 2013 -- in terms of both viewership and revenue -- than either of its competitors at Fox News and CNN, according to Nielsen data featured in a new Pew Research report. Prime-time viewership declined by a staggering 24 percent (nearly twice the loss sustained by CNN and four-times that sustained by Fox News). Daytime viewership fell by 15 percent, even as it rose at both of the other networks.

On the revenue side, MSNBC was projected to decline by 2 percent, while both CNN and Fox News were projected to experience growth of 2 percent and 5 percent, respectively. MSNBC was expected to bring in $475 million in revenue: less than half what CNN will make and roughly one-quarter of what Fox News will make.

Conventional wisdom has it that cable news doesn't have much of a future: The audience is old and getting older, the television landscape is growing more and more fractured, appointment viewing is becoming a thing of the past, etc. Certainly, every cable news network lost viewers last year. But this version of events often ignores the incredible revenue gains made each year by Fox News (like a rocket) and CNN (far more gradual, but we're still talking billions).

I’m still trying to figure out what the hell happened to MSNBC... Loooooooooonnnngggggg ago back in the late 90s MSNBC was an excellent network with a lot of varied programming. At the time my cable provider only offered CNN and MSNBC as Fox News was still relatively new. MSNBC seemed to be trying to strike a balance with liberal and conservative commentators, and their news reporting was actually pretty fair, especially compared to the crap CNN was serving. For a while you had Laura Ingraham, Michael Savage even had a show, Michael Medved was a regular contributor.

Then the FLorida election case happened, and the folks at MSNBC lost their minds.

Yancy

If it weren’t for the FAA or TSA mandating that every airport in the universe has CNN playing on every TV in the terminals would CNN even have an audience?

I do admit to two shows I enjoy on MSNBC. Lockup and To Catch A Predator. BUT, since they are on liveleak I don’t have to support them.

I need you to have a seat right over there.

Doesn’t matter....

MSNBC fills a niche, pacifies the largely-gay New York NBC employees, and most of it’s viewers are press themselves.

Take a look at the advertising on MSNBC sometime. It’s quite eye-opening who supports 24/7 hate TV.

“I’m still trying to figure out what the hell happened to MSNBC...”

Jeff Zucker happened to MSNBC. He saw it as a way to promote his own leftist views, and keep himself popular in the New York parties scene.

This is the same guy that wrote Obama’s Styrofoam columns stadium speech, if you remember.

Now Zucker is CEO at CNN, and the exact same thing is happening there.

This is all just speculation of course.
MSNBC could still pull it out, assuming 'Morning Joe's' long rumored sex change operation occurs soon allowing her to triple co-host with the pseudo-beautiful and extra bossy and super overbearing Rachel Maddow with Mika what's-her-name bringing up the rear for an all-women, all lesbo vagina-thon aimed at Republicans, animal haters, water-stealing farmers and people who despise Hussein Obama-an audience potentially in the hundreds of millions.
I feel it in my gut-MSNBC's best days are on the way and I, for one, would never miss miss a show.

What does Micro-Soft NBC have to worry about financially? The Bill Gates billions can support them forever.

Back when all of this was fresh and new in the 1990’s I would come home from work and most of the early evening was watching the various Cable News Networks, with the exception of CNN.
I loved watching Fox News and MSNBC, mind you this was during the Clinton years.
But it has been a long time since I have done any this and for the most part it has all become to stale for me to watch anymore.
Just a lot easier to get my news raw over the Internet without listening to all the “Hot Air” that passes for any kind of journalism these days.

While CNN has been suffering too of late, at least their CNN International operation still has a good number of viewers (though it has run into competition from BBC World News and al-Jazeera English channel).

You are absolutely correct. My sentiments exactly.
In fact when MSNBC premiered the big story that week was the plane that went down over the Atlantic that we still to this day do not know the truth on.

As long as they have Comcast or other corporate entity to subsidize them, they will never be “in trouble” of going away.
