IRS is overwhelmed by tax return identity theft (Wasserman Schultz on the case)
KSL ^ | 3/21/14 | William E. Lewis Jr.

**SNIP**

Last month, the Senate Judiciary Committee passed a companion version of legislation written by U.S. Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) that would make tax return identity theft a greater priority for the federal government and strengthen criminal penalties against identity thieves.

The “Stopping Tax Offenders and Prosecuting Identity Theft Act” would also expand the definition of an identity theft victim to include not only individuals, but also businesses and organizations that have had their identities stolen for phishing schemes in an attempt to obtain sensitive personal information from consumers.

“Every year, millions of hard-working Americans file tax returns in the hope of paying bills, creating savings or even taking a vacation, sadly discover that one has already been filed and a refund claimed,” Congressman Debbie Wasserman Schultz told KSL. “This legislation is imperative to better protect tax filers and penalize criminals for their actions.”

That’s what happened to my son and his wife last year. They didn’t get their tax return and when he called about it last year, found out that it had already been filed. Thank goodness it was flagged for investigation. They finally got their tax return just a few weeks ago. I hope there is no problem with this year’s tax return. Their first child is due any day now and they need the money!

I’ve been thinking about this for a few hours, even before seeing this post, wondering how to protect my ID and the ID of others since our government refuses to do it.

I remember the slaughterhouse that was invaded by ICE and all the illegal aliens had stolen ID that the government didn’t charge them with.

Then California came up with a law outlawing using E-Verify.

I also remember reading an article a few years back that says the IRS will send a refund to multiple users of a SSN, not telling the citizen that his SSN has been stolen.

So, I’ve been wondering what would happen if I posted a picture of myself using my social security number as the file name somewhere on the internet. No other information would be necessary, no name or address.

Google that Social Security Number and my picture would come up.

Who would be stupid enough to do the same with a stolen ID?

If enough people did the same, we would be able to protect ourselves, bypassing the government’s refusal to protect us.

So, I Googled a SSN nearly the same as mine and nothing came up except a list that had the SSN but nothing else.

I think my return’s acceptance sped through like crap through a goose. I had to write them a check for $5205.

How about a national sales tax that will replace the IRS? But then, how will they be able to buy votes?

Yeah, I’m gonna have to write about $2,800 this year. Got a nice bonus last year, but no taxes were taken out.

The Social Security Administration KNOWs which numbers are being falsely used, and they also keep track of when, where and which fraudster is using it.

They don’t do anything about it because each of these frauds have to pay some amount for the 7.65% worker payments to FICAs OASDI and Medicare (the ones that have a W-2 job using the fake number).

IOW, money! They like the money. They keep track of the real owner’s payments so that they won’t have to pay out too much when it comes time for he or she to retire. They can’t have a bundled of payments from all the frauds going to just that one person’s account.

This was a trivial matter 20 years ago and it is an even more trivial matter now to parse out the numbers, names and locations for the SSA to keep track. They don’t WANT fraud to stop because they like the extra money.

They just don’t realize that eventually these illegals are going to get amnesty and some damn fool Democrat and RINO are going to make sure their earlier ‘contributions’ are counted. And we will all end up giving these illegals a free retirement.

I was thinking that if the idea went viral, an employer could Google a SSN to see who’s picture came up.

At first I thought this was satire. When I file my taxes I often find myself digging into my savings and cancelling a vacation I can no longer afford.

Of course, I've been responsible, hardworking and modestly successful. That makes me one of the people the Democrats want to punish with even higher taxes.

That would be awesome if someone would file for me.

The STOPIT Act? Really?

One of my civilians said his tax return was rejected because it looks like someone else filed with his wife's data.

I have location blocking active for general browsing - when i first turned it on, Google Analytic was tracking and when it got blocked, a new tab popped up with my address on it. No telling how much stuff that all these companies gather with tracking is out there or how complete a picture all the bits and pieces can make.

And that is a huge part of what is wrong with our system of taxation, and why so many people are vulnerable to the "tax cuts for the rich" mantra. Imagine - you're a serf, and you look forward to the opportunity to file your tax "obligations" because you look at it as a financial bonus. It's downright insidious.

I very much doubt it. Leftist elected politicians are a problem, but the multitudes of leftist cube critters in Congressional offices and throughout DC are a bigger problem. They are the ones actually authoring the sea of regulations.

Every taxpayer should try to file taxes as soon as possible every year, electronically if possible. It blocks any subsequent electronic filing.

ID thieves attempt to file electronically before you and claim withholding that can not be verified because the information is not available to the IRS until May. They can claim withholding, earned income credits, additional child tax credits and a big refund before the real taxpayer files. The real taxpayer is stuck trying to resolve the situation and it may take several years to sort it out.

File as early as possible, even if you owe, even if you have to amend.

After my wife, who is from Austria, got her Green Card, she went to Kohls and filled out a credit app, and was promptly denied. When I got credit report to find reason it turned out that a Man with a Latino surname had been using her newly issued SS# for 30 years, job, house, healthcare, credit cards.... you name it he had it.
When I filed our joint Tax Return the IRS sent it back for clarification of her SS#. Needless to say HOMELAND SECURITY fixed the Problem overnight by telling the IRS the number is new and had never been issued before. Problem Solved instantly, it literally took 2 days.
My point to this story is simple::THEY KNOW EVERY LAST PERSON THAT USES A FRAUDULENT SS# as WELL AS THE BUSINESSES THAT ALLOW IT. THEY DON’T CARE.

File early if you have kids or education credit. Both seem to have attracted lots of identity thieves lately.

If you owe, you can still file but have the payment sent over on April 15.

Selective outrage for illegals with stolen identities.

AND if you are getting a “refund” you’re just making an interest free loan to the one that has a boot on your neck.

I’m going through this as I speak. Years of claiming 2 dependents. Earning $60,000 the last few years. Residing in WV since 1970. All of a sudden I’m a Wal-Mart door greeter in Florida earning $5600 claiming 12 dependents. Oh. instead of sending my return to the bank I’ve used for years . . . put my return on this prepaid debit card. Nothing stands out here. Unless I make one tiny honest mistake on my return. The emotions are running high. Thought process is in a fog. I’d bet every tax return for the rest of my life that there is a correlation between the spike in ID theft cases and the 3,000 employees to investigate these cases and the 35,000 the IRS has trained in the basics of ID Theft. Betcha! Training thieves to profit in a system designed to fail.
