Over the years millions of Turks have been on the streets protesting the ruling AK Party's broken promises to honor the Republic of Turkey's secular heritage. (To be fair the AK Party did clean up some of the corruption and helped the economy but the trade off is worrisome.)

BTW the Army used to handle these matters but the EU complained that if Turkey wanted in the EU the Army would have to stop protecting the secular heritage of the Republic of Turkey.
