Final OK for Georgia’s ‘slowpoke’ bill
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution ^ | 03-11-2014 | Kristina Torres

Left-lane lurkers on Georgia’s highways and interstates are a pen-stroke away from trouble under legislation given final passage Tuesday by the Georgia Senate.

House Bill 459 would allow authorities to ticket those who lollygag in the state’s left lanes. The bill makes it a misdemeanor for any driver on a divided highway who does not move to the right when a car going faster approaches from behind.

With the state House already signing off on the measure, all it needs is Gov. Nathan Deal’s signature to become law.

Whats wrong with just doing what we have always done and ride the slow poke’s butt then flash your lights and generally be obnoxious til they pull over. I have never had a problem with it. :-)

Seriously my main beef with it is that I just hate the mindset of everything should be again’st the law. Thats what this kind of navel lint stuff is. Next thing it will be if you forget to turn on your lights while driving on a cloudy day. Its all just a bunch of BS.

The guy squatting in the fast lane wreaks havoc in traffic flow, and it affects all the lanes, and is extremely dangerous, cops and traffic experts despise it, and drivers as well.

If you get on several of these threads you learn that the guys who do this, mostly do it on purpose, the freeway is where they can assert themselves against the world, assert some authority as they see it, get back at those people who they don’t like.

Letting them know that they can be ticketed for it, will weaken some of their self righteousness.

I didn’t think there were any left lanes in GA.

The essence of good transportation is speed. It is why Man has valued fast horses for centuries, for instance. It is why we pay for air travel.

This law is an attempt to help maintain that essence on the highways in the face of clueless drivers, of which there are many.

First why would I want to go on a bunch of threads about this? I drive in the Metro Atlanta traffic on the expressways all the time. Everybody speeds like a bandit me included. You don’t need to give people a ticket because they are only doing 75MPH in a 70MPH or 70MPH in a 65MPH which is what mostly goes on. Almost never is somebody poking along at 45-50MPH in the left hand lane. It wuld be suicide in Metro Atlanta or on I-985 heading up to Gainesville. You will get run over.

Again its just a bunch of people who need the fudgesickle stick surgically removed from their anal canal trying to micromanage everybody else. You could make up some BS reason its dangerous for almost anything in the world.

Come on down to Atlanta and try to slow poke in the left lane. You will be run over. Probably by me.

yep. As an American it is my God given right to speed. Wussy.
Seriously one problem is people going the speed limit in both lanes allowing traffic to pile up with the poor buy in the back going about 30 on interstate. I’ve seen it happen.

Well I thought so, you are one of those people, well, instead of you deciding what speed is adequate to start blocking the fast lane, now you will have to not impede traffic flow in the fast lane, or get ticketed.

“I didn’t think there were any left lanes in GA.”

Every lane in Metro Atlanta is the left lane. They don’t call I-285 the Atlanta Speedway for nothing. LOL!!

If you want to know who thinks up these stupid laws just remember back to the kids who were on the student council and hall monitors in High school. :-)

The only think I’ll get a ticket for is riding your slow poke azz so I can get by and continue speeding up the road. I don’t need a cop to push you out of my way. :-)

On cop threads, road rage is one of the worst problems we get from the lane blockers, the cops despise them.

When asked why more of those guys aren’t busted, here are a few of the cop answers.

“”Because they move out of OUR way in a hurry. In order to write ‘em, you have to catch ‘em. Most people tend to obey the laws when there’s a patrol car around...especially when they’re behind you.””

“”Because I don’t work in every jurisdiction in the country.....””

“”A simple rule of thumb is that if you are being passed on the right, you are in the wrong lane (regardless of what the speed limit may be). One should only use the passing lane for passing - not for cruising. This used to be ‘common sense’ and was taught as part of driver education, but it has seemingly disappeared right along with common decency.
The Germans certainly have figured it out, so it is puzzling why American drivers cannot. Perhaps it is just a sign of the continual ‘dumbing down’ of our society.””

“”This applies here, in day light and night time. People wont budge. I’ve recently started stopping for it and everyone and I mean everyone I stop, seems to have no idea the differences in the lanes. Even after explaining it, some still dont understand. Our driving laws and licensing laws absolutely suck. We do need to be more like the German way of doing things.””

“”Recently, I was traveling south at about 75 mph when I came upon a guy in the far left lane doing about 70. Speed limit is 70. There’s 3 lanes. I stayed on the guy’s a-ss for about 2 miles. I flashed him twice, nothing. I didn’t want to haul balls, but he was starting to get all kinds of cars backing up. He had 2 lanes available to his right. Normally, I’ll keep it at 78-80 to keep the flow going. This guy wouldn’t move. Finally, I turned my lights on, he began to pull over to the left, I motioned -—> and he got the hint, started moving over, got into the ‘slow’ lane, I turned my lights off, got into the middle lane and continued about my business. I think the guy was perplexed as WTF just happened. So, from there on out, I continued the 22 miles south until I hit the county line, and you think anyone even dared to get into the left lane? It was awesome. I can’t imagine what everyone behind me were thinking.””

“”I lived in Germany for two years and have been back twice to visit when on vacation. They definitely have superior driving skills when compared to Americans. The Germans have perfected the “keep right except to pass” way of driving and EVERYONE uses their directional signals. Passing on the right is verboten (prohibited), but is not necessary because nobody hogs the passing lane.””

And being forced to duck behind somebody going slower than the speed limit, just so a speeder can go by me, ain’t something I’ll do either.

Me either. But to some here, that makes us passive aggressive Barney Fifes.

I recall G. Gordon Liddy’s commentary about this eons ago. SPEED doesn’t kill... differental speed kills. And he also.was emphatic that the left lane is called the “overtaking lane” and as long as you are not overtaking someone, you rarely belong there.

I drove on the Autobahn... once. I was all of 18 driving 136 MPH... and up behind me were Lamborghinis and Porsches wanting to overtake me... I got out of the way.

It is customary for those on the Autobahn traveling at a significantly greater speed in the overtaking lane to leave their left blinker on as a strobe warning to drivers ahead about to be passed.

Georgia is not a nanny state. Been here all 56 years of my life. Laws like this are the result of self appointed road police who feel it is there job to ensure others follow “their” rules. I hope they issue 100,000 tickets the first day.

Thank goodness! I’ve been keeping my eye on this one. Too many people in this city who want to troll along at 45 mph in the fast lane on the highway. And I know from personal experience that you WILL see the cops enforce this one.

It’s very simple: if you aren’t passing anyone, get in the right lane ASAP.
